What did you like about the class?

1 I admired Joe's ability to explain both sides of a matter, while maintaining a neutral position himself.
1 It was a nice well focused class with a professor who was able to stay on subject and not go off on tangents while still making history seem like a somewhat personal subject.

1 I love the forums. They are a great to way to expand on the subjects we learn about. Not for the underachiever! I love how Escobar expands upon the book by telling his own stories, showing us vacation (History nerd) photos, and showing relative videos from other historians. He's rad!
1 I like that he is a history nerd like me and is the type of person who goes to as many historical sites as possible and brings back with him some sort of trinket from the historical gift shop. I also like how he knows everything that he is talking about and has good discussions with his students in class.

1 I thought that this class was very informative and that the videos that Joe played were very helpful.
1 I learned alot and I enjoyed it! I learned alot of things about the government that i missunderstood or didnt know at all. Even other things that were going on around the states during these eras.
1 He was always on top of the assignments for Moodle. Also responded to all emails within a day.

1 I like all the different forms of media that are used in class lectures. It keeps things interesting when there is videos, charts, pictures and even current events that are comparable to the time we are studying.

1 Everything! Awesome class! The format of this course is designed very well. Being able to take the quizzes multiple times really, really helps for the midterm/final. The instructor is very fair to everyone's views and rarely comes across as biased on anything, and admits when he does. There is just no reason everyone can't get an A in this course.

1 Almost everything. The instructor was both knowledgeable and engaging to the point where showing up to class was a sincere pleasure. Every day I knew I would learn, be entertained, and that my voice would be heard if I had any questions. Mr. Escobar is extremely clear on how the grading works, and what students will need to do to be most effective in the class. By being clear and punctual with his deadlines, he motivated me to keep up with all the work without ever being harsh or overly-strict. Best teacher I've had at Lane.
1 I really liked Joe's choice of forum materials. It was a refreshing new presentation of the material we were learning about that gave a well rounded insight to the happenings of the times, often from the point of view shared at the times (ie: local newspaper clippings and the historical cartoons) that made me want to comment and discuss.
1 i liked this class because although it was a hybrid we used both online and in class time effectively
1 That it was balanced between online, open discussion, and covering the course material.
1 Thorough and clear understanding of class expectations. Hybrid class was excellent. The on-line quizes reinforce textbook reading and class lectures. The instructor in engaging in his lectures and materials, videos, etc. keep interest and are another great reinforcement of the material. I am in my third year of a double major and this is my second term with this instructor. My only regret was that I didn't have him as an instructor sooner so that I had been able to take more of his classes!!! Most organized and thourough instructor ever!
1 Joe's enthusiasm for history was evident in his lessons and I found them to be entertaining as well as educational.
1 This class was great. I came into it keenly interested in history and I was pleased to find that I was able to learn a tremendous amount in the 10 weeks over which the class convened. Mr. Escobar is an impassioned, effective and fair instructor who knows how to bring history to life. Skilled at exposing the more inglorious truths of our country's history, Mr. Escobar casts history in a satisfyingly objective light - one free of the cloying romanticism that I've experienced in other American history classes. With a talent for connecting the antique to the modern, Mr. Escobar makes history relevant and interesting. Take this class. Best instructor I've had so far at Lane.
1 I love learning about history in general. Professor Escobar made class entertaining and I feel like I am leaving the class knowing a lot more in detail about U.S. history. I really enjoyed how he challenged certain aspects that were in documentaries or even in texts.
1 Learning about stuff that was previously taught, except the prior knowledge was faulty.
1 Joe is clearly enthusiastic about the subjects, which makes for engaging lectures.
1 He seemed very passionate and knowledgable about the subject. He showed videos that were relavent, and in my opinion not to boring. I was very easy for me to stay interested and awake during his classes.

1 The way in which the majority of the class homework was done through Moodle.

1 Although this class was extremly difficult, I thouroughly enjoyed it. Definitely a high maintenance class though. I loved Joes enthusiasm about his class. It was very refreshing.
1 What I like best is, I will remember what I have been taught, more than my other courses. Granted 50% only, yet I love history as a result of Professor Escobar's teaching abilities. I feel like I will be stopping at historical sites, with my kids as a result of HST 201 & 202. History is the foundation for the future.

1 Forum while being a nice tool for discussion about topics there seemed to be a little over emphasis on them in the final grade at twenty percent aside from that it was an overall a good class.

1 I loved this class and can't think of a way to improve it.

1 I really liked the layout of the class so overall I am really happy with the class.
1 I would have enjoyed the slides having a little more information on them or bullets. It would have been nice for the days I missed class and went back to check the slides. I feel I wasnt making the same connections.

1 I think the questions he writes for the final can be tricky. I know he says there are no trick questions, but I find myself feeling more prepared for the tests than I actually end up being. His non-trick trick questions bother me a bit. I wish he would have clear questions, because test anxiety severely affects those people especially when you get to a question that is a full paragraph packed full of details and one tiny little detail may be incorrect while the rest is correct. Those questions, while seemingly easy when we review, are very confusing when first seen. This leads to a lot of confusion when you take the midterm, that generally clears up by the final. But if you bomb the midterm on those questions, you can't necessarily make it up with the final.
1 I really don't like having to do the forums because it really does take a ton of time to do it well.
1 I dont know how it would be improved. I personally would like to see the forums go away and thas just because I forget them
1 I think that this class could be improved by having a later time in the day for when class starts.
1 Not split the civil war in half from the first half of the year and starting the second half.

1 I think that we should have discussed the forum questions and responses more.
1 This class could be improved more with the quiz and textbook set up. It was kind of confusing that we needed to read the next weeks chapter while studying the current weeks chapter. I felt rushed in the reading with the quizzes and the lectures. They just didn't;t seem to add up to me.
1 This is a great class. I really like how fair it is and if you stay on top of things it is easy to be successful. Don't change a thing.

1 I didn't like that we are graded for our attendance. This is NOT a public school. I pay to go to school, so if I decide that I want to come to class or not, well that is my decision as a young adult. We're no longer kids. We should be graded only on our understanding and knowledge of the material that is presented in class.

1 I can't really think of anything. As far as school goes, I couldn't ask for a better instructor and learning environment.
1 Being as it is a hybrid class, more online work perhaps. The forums I had a hard time putting in my input as once I said my piece there wasn't much more to say as I mostly agreed with everyone else. The videos in class were hard for me to pay attention to (as it is for me in any class), not sure how to alter this as the videos were informative if I could pay attention.
1 Even though I know there isn't extra in class time for some discussion of the forum material but that would be nice. I will definitely make it to a office hour to ask the questions in the future.

1 Maybe somehow require people to actually give more effort into what they post in the forums. Like if a person doesn't contribute, their post can be deleted or something to that sort.

1 Mr. Escobar does a good job of getting his students interested in the content, but the format of the classwork (forums and tests) doesn't capitalize up that interest. I think that a smattering of socratic seminar-type discussion days throughout the term would be a good outlet for students to discuss some of the concepts that Mr. Escobar makes so interesting in his lectures. Forums somewhat accomplish this, but it's tempting to blow those off with shallow responses. I would have leapt at the chance to participate in a full-blown in-class discussion about the content.
1 Perhaps a few more assignments that we could have had for homework.
