about the class?

| The 1900s are easier to learn about and Mr. Escobar is an amazing teacher. We were able to see people from that actual time period and hear the people was good to connect to. |
| Very upbeat class feeling. Instructor sounds like a motivational speaker when he speaks. Fast paced, but takes time to explain things if a student needs further clarification |

| The structure is consistent and effective. The instructor is knowledgeable, well versed and articulates his speech very well. He always shows up and shows up smiling. His setup allows every student a very realistic possibility of getting an A if they put the time in. The instructor does an excellent job teaching the course in such a way no student can dispute the material. Logical conclusions are drawn from fact based analysis and points are made clear. |
| That Escobar taught in a non-biased manner, since it's US History there's some bias. Honestly, I have no idea what his political affiliation is because he kept it so obscure. I also loved the way he was so enthusiastic and engaging when teaching history. He also made it easier to understand the book and I'd recommend people read the chapters before class. All in all this class was a good choice to take and I recommend taking any US History course with Joe Escobar. He wants everyone to succeed and you can tell he loves his job. |
| I liked the lack of sugar coating when talking about our current society. I liked that he was honest about things I feel most teachers wouldn’t bring up. His enthusiasm was awesome too. |
| Mr. Escobar was full of energy. I did not fall asleep a single time, "in HST 203" all term. |
| Class presentation is very polished. Ability to take quizzes online and exams at the testing center is very convenient. |
| I liked it because it was a different view and a different way of explaining history than I had been exposed to. |
| The topics were straightforward and the instructor gave the students all the chances to succeed in the class. Also, he was very respectful of what he was saying, if he was going to say something that could sound offensive to someone he made it clear that it wasn't his intention to do so. |

| Instructor was very knowledgeable of the subject. I like the forums. |
| It was clearly structured and well taught. It was also straight to the point and upfront about how you can earn a good grade. |
| I felt Mr. Escobar was a great instructor and used the course to show not only the past but how it correlates to todays society. He was able to teach the class with out injecting his own personal views into the course. |

| I really enjoy all these classes. I have never been a fan of history in general or memorization. So I would almost always have trouble in history classes until these classes. I love that it is not only based on memorization but critical thinking as well. Also Escobar finds ways to make even dull material seem interesting to me. |
| Honestly EVERYTHING! When I first read Joe's long welcome email before class, I was like oh shoot is this the class for me? I was quite intimidated... But after even my first week I realized how much this was the perfect class for me. The way he brings todays current events in with past history is not only relevant, it makes us as students think outside the box. I think it's so clever how he really challenges our everyday thinking along with peoples stereotypes or justifying one side or the other. I have always been interested somewhat in history but Joe sparked something in me that makes me want to continue this kind of thought process and make sure I keep some aspect of this class learning in my everyday life. Joe also is way more than fair on the assignments. I've had many teachers that don't care about attendance or even assignments it's just how you do on the tests and honestly for me showing up is the first step and oh so important in your learning experience, so rewarding people who do is quite fair. Anyone can read a book, but actually taking in what the instructor, and let me clarify, a good instructor's lessons is so valuable. I would suggest this class to EVERYONE! Amazing teachers like Joe are hard to find, and from my experience when the teacher is so enthusiastic about the class thats when the students learn the most! |
| I really liked that you presented us with the idea of a spectrum. Almost nothing is black or white, and particularly in history, so I really appreciated that. |
| The information was very relevant and interesting. I found the presentation to be unbiased and fair. As a result I have a better understanding go my country's history politically, socially, and economically. That will help me to better understand the democratic process I live under and the impact I can have on it. I also enjoyed the forum assignments. They were a good way to use the knowledge gained throughout the term. |
| It included materials from different perspectives, sources, and in different formats. I especially liked watching the documentary clips. There was fair and worthwhile opportunity to earn credit through online quizzes and forums.The instructor made the topics intriguing and presented everything thoroughly. I have a much better understanding and knowledge of US history and poliics than I did before. |
| Professor Escobar was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable in all class materials. Lectures were never boring, or insufficient. Professor Escobar used multiple levels of media in order to solidify materials and help students learn through multi-dimensional ways instead of expecting all students to learn one way. He is very fair in his forums and extra credit opportunities. Tests come from all the material, no surprises. |
| I like that the expectations for students are very clear. Also, you can tell he really plans out each lesson each day and is prepared to use every minute of class time. There is no busy work and there is nothing we do to just fill time. |
| I really enjoyed the course, I like have the past term as well. I feel Escobar's teaching methods and knowledge of the subjects are really helpful to understanding US history and taking away the facts rather than opinions or one sided stories. |
| How in depth, clear, and well laid out the information was. The 20th century is a flurry of activity where massive changes are taking place in the constitutional order and cultural environment. Within this miasma there's wars and policies that would shape the American century. Joe was effective at organizing all this information to give clear demarcations of epochs where students could clearly see the beginnings of trends, and where one era ended and another began. This was especially important in terms of policy since the New Deal years are so heavy with reforms as well as the LBJ White house. By the end of the term I was lucidly able to associate the presidents with their policies and their times which was the most useful plethora of knowledge I derived from the class. |
| I liked how enthusiastic Joe was about the subject and how he encouraged us to look at things from different perspectives! I felt like the class flew by usually lectures drag on and on but he always made class interesting and chose awesome video clips and images, I also liked how clear the expectations were! |
| Material is well though good relative rate not to fast good paste forums were well implemented along with material to make it some good discussions learned more than I anticipated. |

| I enjoyed learning about the US' history during this time period. America's 20th century proved to be a really interesting, complex topic that I had never fully covered in depth. The workload helped me to both learn the information and manage my time to succeed in the class. |

| I learned a lot. i have taken other courses at lane and this class as well as 201 and 202 have impacted me a lot by making me more aware of our nations history. |
| This class was very easy to follow along and understand. I was able to take away more from this class that any other high school classes I had taken prior to this one. |
| I liked the slideshows and how prepared Escobar was before class unlike some LCC professors. |
| What I liked about this class was the videos that were shown. I would consider myself as a visual learner. So watching videos of the event or subject we're learning was very helpful other than just seeing words on the screen. |

| I truly don’t believe Mr. Escobar can improve at this time. He used all forms media and teaching examples to the best of his ability. |
| The textbook is very dense, so I ended up with a lot of notes, most of which didn't really apply to the course. While you cant make the book any less dense, perhaps a reading guide of some-sort would be beneficial. |

| Joe has certainly mastered the structure of his classes, and I feel like there's not much that can be improved. |
| Personally I hate the forums. I would rather have a 2 hour lecture without forums than an hour and twenty minute lecture with forums. The reason for this is because I would rather listen to an enthusiastic instructor talk about history in an environment where I can immediately ask questions than read a students half ass'd assessment of some piece of history he is writing only because he has to. That is just me though. I did knowingly sign up for a hybrid course I did that because I like the instructor and I believe the lectures are second to none not because I like the online part. |

| I think the instructor has done a for job with this class. He incorporates a good amount of images and videos. He also shows the connection to today by sharing stories on some of his visits to monuments and historical places that are talked about in class. |
| perhaps give a better example of how the midterms and finals will look, with or without putting actual test questions on them, just so students will know what to expect and can study with more than with just the quizzes. The method of the study is fine it's the difference in the layout that could change |
| I think the forums could be improved. like making 3 posts due through out the week like sun/wens/fri would be a good idea. due to the fact i was a student who would for get i posted right when the forum opened then not post anything for the rest of the week and it would hurt me. |

| I would try more in class discussions rather than online forums. however, I understand that more people are likely to participate in a non face to face interaction. Perhaps group discussions in class, then sharing together as groups on discussion topics. |

| I would like to see more group work. The forums are nice but it seems to me like people focus on their own posts more than the overall discussion. Also it was rare for people to have debates in class while it still happened I would like something that encourages more of this. |
| I truly don't have much to say in the way of improvements. I guess one piece of feedback would be to give a little longer between new forums. But I understand it's only a 10 week course so there isn't that much time. I will say I loved the Forums and they are such an amazing way to get us thinking and stretch our minds! They can be a lot of work though with research and all so having a bit of a break in between is nice. |
| Sometimes I feel like you can say things that are a little biased. Or maybe just that the way you teach is from a single perspective, I would have liked to see more points of view from a more diverse group on different subjects we learned. |

| Not really. The course had a clear thesis (American Nativism) and the left/ right spectrum, both of which served as useful compasses though to the choose to organize antagonists to certain movements, policies, and conflicts. Without those then the course would have been muddled. However, Joe anticipated that and provided a highly visual way to nail down new information in a clear, concise way. I don't think much could be added because Joe was barely able to get everything into each class session. If I were to make any suggestions it would be for the sake of my own entertainment such as more nerdy digressions into philosophers or the battles of WW2 but I am well aware that's beyond the scope of the class. |

| I think a writing sample of forum responses would help with the first forum. While I had the guidelines for what type of writing would score each score, a writing sample would help first time forum users form their arguments effectively and prep for the coming weeks. |

| On moodle, each week is a little confusing because a quiz that is due the Sunday before the start of week 3 would be listed under week 3 which confused me at the beginning of the class. |
| This class is pretty good as it is right now. I don't see anything that needs improving. The class is helpful and fun to take. |
