Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included all important class dates, such as quiz deadlines, forum start and stop deadlines, initial post and final reply deadlines, and exams?
NOTE: I am talking about officially subscribing to the Google calendar, which provides you with automatic updates and reminders. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Since this is an accelerated 5 week long course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace. Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook. MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (60%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap. Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific. I'd appreciate your honesty.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

The MindTap service is easy to navigate and I think it is worth the money for sure. |
I would have liked to have a hard copy version of the textbook available without having to pay so much extra |
I got both a hard copy textbook, and the e-book. Both are very useful!! I like these both than the course as the info is a lot easier for me to follow. |
I like the mind tap textbook a lot. It is easy to use and easy to take notes on. The only thing I would say is leaving all of the chapters open the entire term so students could go back. There was one point in the second half of the term when I wanted to go look at an old chapter but I couldn't since they were closed. Other than that it was great. |
I liked that the book was on mindtap because I could read it anywhere on my phone. I also liked the amount of reading for the text book. The information wasn't too much making it overbearing and it wasn't too short not giving me enough information. The amount of pictures and examples was great and being able to have so many different pages lets me stop studying without losing my place. I just don't know if it's really worth $80. |
I did not think it was necessary for students to have to purchase another learning platform when we are already paying extra to take online classes. |
I was disappointed in the lack on
coverage in the book. It could have
more detail. I did not use the highlighter or
notes in MindTap (just used google
docs) or the "read it out loud to me"
option because the voice was so
robotic. |
MindTap was easy to use and the cost was very reasonable. I loved the ease with which you can take notes while reading the chapters. |
I like the read it out loud to me option because I learn best listening and moving around and using that option helps me so much. |
I loved mind tap and with how they set up the assignments after each chapter to review, i also love the talk text because my mind wanders very easy so if its reading it to me and i'm reading it, its easier to comprehend but it kept not working every time i would pause and come back to it would just reset itself and i would have to wait for it to get back to my spot. Thats my only concern about it |
Very satisfied, thought it had plenty of information on each chapter, First time using Cengage and I enjoyed it... |
The positives were that it was well organized and easy to study from and use. The negatives were the cost of it. |
One thing I like about the text book is the readability option because I work a lot of hours and it's nice to listen along and then pause and highlight the important stuff. |
Nothing else |
I think that the mintap/cengage platform was very beneficial for learning the information in this class. I like how organized it is and that I can clearly see deadlines, and organize work by reading and by tests. Some challenging things were that the mindtap only works on a laptop, because one time I was away from home before due date and tried to download the app on my phone, and it did not let me complete the work. Also, I think if there was a way to view the textbook material at the same time as the tests it would be very helpful because then I would be able to go back and read rather than just remembering off the top of my head. I think that the textbook was good, and the texts used were connected to the questions on the tests very well. |
I honestly would have liked the ability to open my textbook in a kindle version or outside of mindtap. It made it a bit difficult to navigate and took a bit of time to make sure I was on the right chapter while looking over the homework. 80$ is also quite expensive to have to pay out of pocket since financial aid doesn't come until a few weeks into the term. I didn't use any of the features because I'm old fashioned. I like to write my notes out or else I won't really remember them. I would like it we had some kind of study guide for the chapters instead of just "take notes" as I'm not sure what is relevant or not and feel like i end up writing down the whole chapter. |
There's was plenty of detail in the book to help me through the class. I thought it was an alright book source to use, nothing really bad about it. |
The only complaint I have was when you'd full screen a picture in the textbook, once you exited the picture it would back you all the way to the cover page. The price was reasonable and I get that it is meant for a 10 week course, but paying for 5 weeks was a bit annoying however I understand there's no alternative. |
I think that the book readings weren't too long, which allowed me to not lose interest. MindTap quizzes were also a good way of understanding if I was retaining the material. I didn't really use the features like highlighting or the read-aloud feature. I tend to type notes on a google doc instead. |
I like the book and its reasonable for a 101 class coverage of the topics. |
This book was better than others I had in the past. The layout did work well. I was still able to save the chapters and use my own notations on my computer as needed to be able to study |
I loved MindTap its a great online purchase. I was very satisfied. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less. For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles. Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

as someone who works full-time and go to school full-time, that’s gonna be really difficult for me |
I am a full time student and I work full time during the week, so the sunday deadlines allowed me to spend saturday and sunday focusing on this course specifically. |
Since there are two chapters each week I would have one chapter due on Wednesday/Thursday each week and one chapter due on Sunday each week |
For me, it is totally fine for these deadlines to exist. Right now, I recently went through an emotionally draining time in my life, so I'm working on trying to pick up the pieces that were left behind. Because of that, currently had a hard time working. But, I'm still fine with these new deadlines! I'm the person who puts things off until the last minute anyways... |
I think at least one midweek deadline should be used. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday and say that a one of the chapters are due, this would give enough time for students to get it done even if they have stuff going on. |
I would like more deadlines because I am for sure a procrastinator. Maybe each quarter you can take a class vote and then see how the majority feels. |
It was very hard to make sure I was available to take midterms and finals. The times are random and not a big enough window. |
I
usually did all of the reading and the
chapter test on a single day on the
weekends because I work all week and
it's hard to motivate myself to do
this everyday after work. I don't know
about forcing everyone to participate
more during the week, but personally,
next month I am going to try to do one
chapter during the week and one during
the weekend. |
I work and have a young child, so extra deadlines would be more difficult. |
I like having deadlines on Sundays, it helped me to be able to schedule my time better than I have had before in other classes. |
For me the deadlines at the end of the week are best but I work full time construction, full time school, have a girlfriend, a big dog, need to exercise, make good food, spend time with people i don't have much time for, so personally the end of the week helps me a lot with how busy my schedule is a lot of the time i just don't have the time to have more deadlines in my already packed week |
I know I was one of those students that only logged in during the weekend, and it caused me to slack on I believe it was chapter 9. I work full time 40Hrs a week and I am enrolled in 15+ credits at LCC I still believe I would find time during the weekdays to be able to complete assignments if it were to get moved to the weekdays. Plus I believe It would make me procrastinate less. |
I am neutral to this. I think there could be some benefits but I also think it could cause issues with other obligations. |
I think midweek deadlines would be fine so long as they're not too early in the day. Since I work retail I work really unpredictable and wonky hours and am exhausted a lot of the time. However, as someone who is guilty of doing a lot of the stuff in one night because I get so caught up in work during the week, the smaller deadlines might actually help me instead of hinder me so long as they're the usual 11:59 deadline. An open schedule is nice, but I always find I'm less engaged in a course when it feels like I have all the time in the world (until I don't). It forces me to pay more attention! Hopefully that makes sense! |
I am relatively busy with work since I am a closer so most of the day and night is filled. The Sunday deadline allows me to work on it when my schedule allows. |
I think that there should be midweek deadlines to this course because it encourages students to spread out the weekly work and to not complete it all in one day, and spreading it out will lead to a further understanding of the course information. |
| for me personally, it would have made my midweek workload a lot more stressful | |
For me, midweek deadlines are hard to accomplish as I also work full time and help my family as well. I'm pretty good at keeping a schedule and making sure I get everything done by the end of the week. Additional deadlines would be a big stresser for me and I can see it being the same for others as well. |
I have some obstacles (like work) in the way for these days, but that may just be me. Others may not have this issue and I am in the minority. |
I'm in 4 classes and am playing baseball at lane CC so sometimes I can only sit down for 1 sitting to do all the work due to my busy schedule. I've always done very poorly when there are multiple due dates during a week and not a consistent schedule because I either forget, or get too lazy to log into each class 3-4 times per week. |
I like having deadlines on Sunday because my other classes have deadlines during the week, which could get overwhelming when having to go back and forth from assignment to assignment. Weekends are typically when I have most free time, due to in-person classes or work, so I like the option to spend time on this course on the weekend. |
I am neutral to adding midweek deadlines exactly because it could work well for some and not well for others. |
Work can be a hard obligation to work around, mainly due to those of us who needed to have an online class due to the other commitments |
With Covid this might be a bad idea. I was hospitalized for 3 days and super sick for 17 days and just being able to log in when I felt better was a huge blessing for me and I'm sure for others as well. |

Is there any other type of smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:

I use quizlet. |
I'm afraid that I do not have any suggestions for this. |
My psych class is using launchpad and that might be helpful because you can add more activities for studying. |
| A few months
ago, I finished a podcast called The
History of Rome by Mike Duncan. Pretty
good. |
Not that I know of besides the textbook throughout the course |
No, just used mindtap. |
Class collaborative quizlets are always nice! I don't know if they do it anymore but when I was in high school I vaguely remember teachers being able to host quizlet study term sets and we'd all have to help fill it out. |

I do not know of any history apps, but one app that I think is helpful for staying on track of work and due dates is "myHomework" on laptop and iPhone. It's an app that I update all of my homework due dates weekly and it is very helpful for me. Since using this app, I have not missed any due dates in my classes and turned everything in on time, which makes me feel very relaxed and organized. |
I haven't used any other apps or web tools for other classes. I did however watch a lot more videos in a previous history class and we had questions specifically on them every week. That was a helpful way of learning for me. |

I've never had an online course go as well as this one did so I'd say keep it how it is. I've always done very poorly in classes without face to face instruction. |
Not that I can think of, I really enjoy the shared Google Doc. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?
| Respondent | Response |

You should add alerts on moodle that reminds people of the deadline for the MindTap work. |
if im happy. |
I would have more things on moodle instead of just mindtap. more than just checking understanding and quizzes each week. Add in at least one writing assignment during the term |
I don't believe I have anything I can add to this. |
No other questions I need to answer. But I want to say why I put I would just recommend instead of highly recommend, it's because this class is simply a lot of work. You are a great instructor and the class is put together very well so it's easy to understand, but definitely lots of work. |
I would put interactive learning like my psych class. Whether it's practice for a test or if it's just matching events to the people attached to them. |
Combine the course onto one platform. |
Can't
think of anything. |
No questions, cant wait for PT.2 |
I think more deadlines would be cool, it might help more people keep engaged. |
I dont believe i have anything else |
I do not have any ideas of any more questions I enjoyed this class and the textbook readings were very interesting! |
I would like to see maybe a lecture video where we have specific notes to take during or some kind of weekly study guide. |
None, thank you for a great term! |
Nothing I can think of! |

Keeping assignments due in the same week in the same block on Moodle makes more sense to me. For chapter 8 there was a little disclaimer saying EARLY DEADLINE, but it was still in the block for the next week and so I assumed it would be due the next week. In all other classes I have ever taken at lane, fully online or not, assignments due in the same week are arranged in the same block, so I missed the disclaimer assuming it would be due at the same time as the other assignments in the block. It is my fault for not checking the block thoroughly before the week started and for not making sure with the calendar, but when every other class, and even the previous assignments in this class, follows the same pattern I think that it is excusable to make the assumption that assignments in the same block are due in the same week. |
I would ask if others were able to study/do work through a consistent time frame, or if they were needing to break up the time throughout the day

I have been taking online classes since covid started. This course was not required for my degree I was just interested in learning more about History and I'm so glad I did! I loved this course. It was actually my favorite class I have ever taken. and thank goodness for that because being so sick it helped that I had liked it. |
