Since this is an accelerated 5 week long course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform.  It allowed students to work at their own pace.  Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook.  MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback.  All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks.  On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.

I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap.  Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.  I'd appreciate your honesty.

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook?  How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)

Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).

Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

Respondent Response

I found that the Mindtap layout and initially subscribing to it was a bit intimidating and confusing, as the initial interface and processes that you go through when first getting enrolled in the course and purchasing the textbook is very clunky and confusing. However, once you are subscribed and enrolled in the class and have purchased the textbook and are completing classwork the system is very smooth, clear, concise, and fair.

Textbook was easy to use and navigate through, and the details within were good as well. The price of $80 is very pricey, but it's well organized and easy to use so it's justifiable. I think it's a good way to contribute in class while classes remain online.

The text book did its job well. The only thing I did not like was the early deadline. I understand that you sent out a reminder that this chapter would be due two days after the test but that is after we have already got into the habit of finishing two or three chapters per week by Sunday.

I believe the cost was fair and I had no bugs or issues preventing me from accessing the course materials, which is always the greatest trepidation when accessing the material through a browser. I feel like there could have been a little more meat on the bones of the material, but that's always going to be true of a summary-level course

I don't have anything to say here... The book was good.

To be perfectly honest. It works for a full course. it might seem a bit pricy for a five-week course, but this was meant to go hand in hand with the first five-week course.

Solid positive: the chapters of focus were brought up, no having to find page number, no looking through a vast table of contents, it was simple, easy, and not tacky.

I love this system, even though it was still expensive for my budget, but the quality is very good

The textbook and mindtap itself were very easy to use, however I do not think the readings gave substantial amounts of information. There were no straight forward definitions for a lot of the terms we were required to learn.

The textbook was easy to read and the information was interesting. Also, there seemed to be plenty of information on each topic. I feel that the $80 was a reasonable price point for the product that I received. I personally found the "read it out loud to me" feature to be very helpful.

i think the price of the text books is fine.

I was highly satisfied with the MindTap

Overall I think this textbook was effective. The text-to-speech would not turn on for me. I think the price was fair but it would be nice if it was possible to keep access after the class because it does cost $80.

I've taken another course with you before, and I had some gripes with the price of MindTap as a product. It is expensive, but I think that it's an effective tool for wrapping up our coursework in an organized fashion. Especially for the purposes of an accelerated course (the last course I took with you was 10 weeks), I think MindTap does it's job well. I found this classes' material to be really interesting, and I think the book covers everything we needed to know in a relatively concise way compared to some other textbooks I've read. The text to speech reader is really convenient too.

Mindtap is priced similarly to my other textbooks. Overall I enjoyed my experience with mindtap and felt like it was very well organized.

I appreciated that the chapters weren't monstrously long, though I could still feel myself not knowing what parts to commit to memory until I took the end of chapter exam which is a bit unfortunate. This is not necessarily only pertaining to this course but I would have appreciated more notice about the price of the textbook so I could plan ahead financially.

I feel like for $80 the textbook was really great. I feel like overall the textbook gave clear and concise information. Although I truthfully didnt read all of it, when using it as a reference for the mini quizzes were helpful. I LOVED the fact that we had three tries. I also really liked how simple the textbook was to access and use. Overall I'm happy with it

I am satisfied with the quality of the textbook. It is easy to search information and its summary is very helpful.

it's not convenient when you open the textbook link beside and you could't highlight or make notes on that page.

I think that the book should come with the course

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day.  In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week.  One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week.  I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less.  For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles.  Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

Respondent Response

I believe that just having a single Sunday deadline in the course gives students a lot of flexibility in their time.

In regards to family, work and other obligations, I do see this as a substantial hurdle throughout the lives of certain students, which wouldn't benefit them in terms of their scores/grades as reaching those deadlines could/would be beyond their control. Therefore, I would just leave the deadlines the way they are.

No matter what you do there's always going to be that student that just makes everything having to do with school harder. The saying is 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink'. I just feel that the student wouldn't understand the benefits of the deadline. Instead they'd believe you're forcing them to drink the water.

I was one of the students who would log in and completely everything due in one go, usually as soon as it was unlocked for completion. I agree that its probably not ideal for deeply absorbing new information, but as this isn't my first encounter with the material and the class is more a refresher of my love of history which I'm taking to meet certain enrollment requirements, and given my chaotic weekly schedule in the Flight Technology program, that's how I decided to proceed. I wanted to make absolutely, 100% sure that I was getting everything done and off of my mind as soon as possible so that it was one less thing to be stressed about, and as I said, I feel that my background in the social sciences and history allowed me to 'get away with it' a bit. Midweek deadlines might help the course, but I think the main source of improvement would be from adding more variety in activity and something that requires students to produce original thoughts about the material. The difficulty, obviously, is that assignments like forum discussions, short essays, source analyses, and other staples of humanities classes are all much, much more time intensive to create and grade as an instructor, even if they're very simple or a basic pass/fail rubric, and that's a huge issue in an accelerated course. I wish I had more helpful advice, but frankly my predominant thought about the course was "Jesus, trying to teach a Western Civ. overview in just 5 weeks (remotely!) is my idea of cruel and unusual punishment". Given the circumstances and the competing requirements of the instruction I think its been very successful! If you think adding more midweek deadlines to the course would help the general student its worth a shot.

I would like that. I was one of the "weekend warriors" which did not work so well...

it would work, if the student had no extraordinary obligations. if they have work or must tend to a relative, however, they should inform the teacher to make their education a sunday-deadline one.

Having once a week deadline is very effective because of work and also being able to catch up with other classes.

I think the deadlines throughout the week would be great for students to use in order to stay more focused on the course.

I think spreading the chapters deadlines out over the week may be a bit more inconvenient for some, but I think that it would have helped me learn the material even better as I would do the work in smaller chunks. Like you mentioned, it would reduce a students ability to procrastinate which is great for those who struggle with it.

i wouldn't like this deadline because im very busy with baseball and work, and my only day off is sundays.

I support the weekend deadlines, because if I missed anything during the week, I can use the weekend to finish, since there are no classes on weekend.

I agree that this class might have been more effective if it had maybe a Thursday deadline for the homework and a Sunday for the test. I guess it's hard to stay motivated if you have a long period of time to complete something that takes a relatively short amount of time to achieve.

I am one of the students that completes everything in one go, or a couple big pushes. While I understand that it's not the most professional way to study, I'm kind of stuck doing that at this point because of my other obligations. Whenever I have free time, I need to give my schoolwork all I've got, so I'll usually have to complete the entire week's worth of work in all of my classes within a 2 day period, or even 1, in order to keep up. The flexibility of the courses I choose is really at this point the largest factor in whether or not I keep or drop a course. That said, I appreciate the flexibility of your courses. In a physical setting, I would agree that midweek deadlines make sense and are probably the most effective.

One singular due date allows for students to plan their workload more effectively.

I'm definitely someone who primarily worked on the weekend and that was very much because I had other due dates during the week that felt more pressing and came up before this class, so I found myself focusing on those before moving onto the chapters. If the weekday due dates were implemented that may have changed but I would still feel the need to focus on the things due before regardless so honestly I'm not totally sure. I feel like it would be term specific for me, especially if I still had a job. Not to mention that sometimes I just can't log on for very long on days where other people in the house are working remotely because our wifi is quite weak.

I am neutral about this for two reasons. If we were in normal times that would be an amazing way to make sure students are staying engaged. It would be tedious and a lot for a five week course but It would be a great way to keep us on track when we start to fall off. I feel like in my own personal life, if you would have had that for us, I dont think I would have done as well. I was juggling so much in this past year along with so many others right now. Given the circumstances I just think that some students just realistically only have that one or two days a week to cram it all in just because out lives are so crazy right now.

I support the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course because in that way, I don't need finish a due rapidly. I can allocate them on average.

I'm disagree with more deadlines, because every one has his own study pace, we should be allowed to have more freedom to arrange our time!

I'm opposed because I personally feel that if the work get done before the dead line you should be fine .

Is there any other type of  smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:

#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?
- OR -
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?
Respondent Response

I do not know of any.

No.

I think it's cool you have access to the data that shows the study habits of the student in your class. Maybe because we no longer get teacher to student facetime you could make video calls to the students who you believe need the most help based on there stats. Maybe give them a talk on better study habits, or help them understand hard peices of the course, or simply qui the student before the exam to keep the info fresh in there head.

Unfortunately no.

The only application that I have used so far is moodle.

honestly, google docs does what needs doing and does it well. no need to add clutter.

Not really

There is no other tool I have used for studying.

Other than google docs/slides/sheets, I have not used any external apps or websites that would be helpful for a history class.

i do not

I strongly suggest having quizlet study list for chapter tests and exams.

I don't really have any ideas regarding this, sorry.

I only have experience with moodle and google docs.

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?

and/or

What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

Respondent Response

I really liked the roomy deadlines you implemented into this class. I also appreciated how clear you made your weekly announcements, and how cut and dry and to the point you explained our responsibilities and what was expected of us during the coming week.

The way this course was ran, especially as a 5 week course, was great. Nothing was confusing, and everything was straightforward. I cannot think of any suggestions to add.

I think you did the good job keeping the layout very simple and organized

Can't think of anything. You were EXTREMELY clear about the pace, the deadlines, the syllabus, the process for doing assignments, and everything else from the very beginning, and that's the most important thing with this kind of class. I think given the circumstances its been excellent. Thank you, and I hope you have a good break!

I have no real questions to ask or add, I'd just rather take a full 10 week course over a 5 week course... Went too fast for me.

make the mindtap part of 5-week 1 and 5-week 2 at some point in the future. help keep continuity.

Maybe having more youtube videos
Thank you!!

Overall, I think making students relearn another program on a website other than moodle is a waste of time.

I would personally recommend that you spread out each weeks reading assignments like you mentioned so that the due dates are throughout the week, rather than just one date at the end of the week. While I do find a single due date to be the most convenient (one can do the work whenever one has time during the week), the spread out format would help people not procrastinate nearly as much which in theory would help them learn the material better.

nothing i can think of.

None

The only thing that I really would strongly suggest changing about this course is midterm/final exam times. Having to start a test at a fixed point during the day is hard and I believe it kind of defeats the purpose of taking an online course. It would make it easier to fit in a student's busy schedule if they could take the test at any time during a single day rather than having a fixed time period on two separate days.

None that I can really think of.

no additional comments.

I don't have any recommendations but I found the weekly emails extremely helpful for knowing what's happening in the course.

none that I can think of smile

I think this course is consistent with my expectancy, so I have no suggestions.

I suggest the professor give a overall summary of the whole course at the end of the term, making a video.
