Since this is an 6 week long summer course, which required a full 11 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform.  It allowed students to work at their own pace.  Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook.  MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback.  All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks.  On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.

I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap.  Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.  I'd appreciate your honesty.

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook?  How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)

Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).

Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

Respondent Response

I found the MindTap textbook very easy to navigate and use. I liked how the assignments were spread out by chapter and that you could immediately answer the questions for each section. I did think it was a high cost compared to the textbooks I have had in previous classes, but it was worth it for the quality of the reading and assignments. I have used this program before and liked it very much then too.

I liked how organized each chapter was, I was quickly able to find which sections I was in need of reviewing more specifically. The layout was easy to follow and made studying easier and very helpful.

I deeply enjoyed the textbook. It was easier and well organized with having all of our assignments go through the book online.

Mindtap was easy to navigate and had a lot of useful tools to help me learn.

I'm pretty sure there was a portion (Image Analysis maybe) where the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.  Since that was during the 1st portion of the term, I can't go back to see where that happened.  I was surprised by that and read it multiple times.

My primary complaint with the course is that most of the quiz and exam questions required the student to remember what the text said verbatim.  Knowledge of the material did not mean that a student could do well on the exam.  100 questions in 90 minutes means less than one minute per question, which did not allow for a student to read through their notes in order to find answers as they were written in the text.

Some of the answers were subjective.  For instance, the image analysis for the Arnolfini Wedding Portrait by van Eyck.  The correct answer was that the technique used was "total abstraction".  That would apply if it were somewhere between impressionism and postmodernism, but I can not think of any painting from the Renaissance where this is a fitting description.

I appreciated that the text respectfully approached church history, which is not true of others I have read.

各方 面都不错,尤其是这本书有插图。

I like MIndTap. MindTap is wonderful textbook. I felt $80 price is not expensive.

I was satisfied with mindtap, although I prefer a physical textbook I get to keep at the end of each term.

While the MindTap service was good, I am not a big fan of required purchases like this. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I like being able to find a cheap deal on a used paper textbook and the required $80 purchase is significantly more than I've spent on other textbooks for my LCC courses.

The textbook seemed light on specific details of historical events. I felt as if I was reading a general summary of events.

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day.  In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week.  One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week.  I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less.  For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles.  Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

Respondent Response

I see the benefit of putting deadlines throughout the week to get students to procrastinate less, however it is very useful to my schedule if I can do all my work on the weekend when I have more time. Although it would be harder, I do think it would be a good idea to put more deadlines throughout the week.

I don’t think it would be helpful my work schedule only allows me sundays off so I was grateful for this deadline and feel as though I was able to understand and study the material on my own timely fashion and complete the assignments with understanding of the material.

I agree, having more deadlines would be helpful to others. For me, with having a full time job on top of being a full time student, I prefer having end of the week deadlines.

I think other deadlines may help improve scores on each chapter test.

Midweek deadlines do pose true obstacles because of work and family obligations.  That was less true for me during the summer than it is fall-spring.  I thought I might mention also that a fair amount of my study time in this course was done after the initial reading of the material and taking notes.

I did very much appreciate that the schedule was well organized and clear.  The routine was regular.  There were no surprise assignments that left few hours to get work turned in.  There were no Moodle forum access problems.  There was plenty of time in advance of the due dates to get work completed.

我同 意在本课程中增加周中截止日期的建议。

I am taking other classes right now and most of the classes' assignments deadline is Wednesday or Thursday. Therefore, I spend the time for others classes by Wednesday or Thursday. Then I can spend the time for this class on Friday, and the weekend for a long time without rushing.

However, I tend to do assignments only on weekends as you said.

To put information in my head, I need to study regularly. Therefore, I am neutral.

I missed some deadlines because I was not home for an extended period of time, however this was purely my fault. Freedom is the absence of work, therefore I hate working. If I can finish something in a day and be free for 6 it is much more preferable, although maybe not practical for most.

I take online courses for flexibility so more deadlines makes it harder for me to be successful.

I have no opinion concerning future class schedules.

Is there any other type of  smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:

#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?
- OR -
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?

No. Other than Canvas, but that is more of a substitute for Moodle.

I’ve only used the google doc feature so I’m not certain!

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?

and/or

What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

Respondent Response

I would recommend using Canvas rather than Moodle, but I realize that would be more of a school-wide change. It was a good course all together, and I would recommend this class to others.

Having the weekends available for work was helpful with my schedule so I feel as though changing the dates may make it difficult or more stressful for future students, maybe changing the due dates for different sections of the chapters could improve the new policy but overall I enjoyed this course.

I strongly suggest more time for 100 question exams.  I would have learned more in this course and would have applied myself with more dedication throughout the course if I had not received a low score on the first midterm despite being well prepared and then realized that an A grade in this course was highly improbable.  After the very first assignment, I knew that getting an A+ wasn't possible.  I would rather that I could have fought for the A.

I suggest teacher supply more material, such as e-books, primary documents.

I am having a fun this class even if it is online.

Thank you so much.
