Since this is an 8 week long summer course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform.  It allowed students to work at their own pace.  Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook.  MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback.  All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (60%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks.  On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.

I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap.  Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.  I'd appreciate your honesty.

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook?  How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)

Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).

Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

Respondent Response

I think the price is extremely reasonable, the amount of info and all the benefits/features of mindtap make it worth it and in all reality should probably cost more due to the multitude of beneficial features.

Mindtap was easy to use and helped out a lot. It allowed us to read the material but also put the material that we read to use by applying it to quiz formats.

Some questions on exam study lists were not found in the books. I liked having it online.

The book was so expensive, plus the cost of mind tap. We are already paying for the cost of the class already, so when the book cost 80 dollars plus the purchase of mind tap, it was ridiculously expensive.

MindTap was easy and well worth the cost.

I had issues with the textbook. There where several times the book quoted someone, but didn‘t state the person it quote. For example: On October 5, thousands of Parisian women, described by one eyewitness as “detachments of women coming up from every direction, armed with broomsticks, lances, pitchforks, swords, pistols and muskets,”

This is basically just a filler quote because we don’t actually know if it was said. This happened a lot in the book. Also, several of the dates behind people’s names in the book were misleading. It was hard to determine whether they were dates that they were in office, alive, or what. This was a distinction from the reading.

I really liked having the online textbook and interactive tests on the mind tap program. However, since it gave you three attempts per section quiz and only three options per question, I felt that I wasn't really learning to my full potential. Anyone could skip through the questions easily without reading the chapter and get 100% on the test which I didn't really find helpful in my learning.

I was satisfied with the quality of the textbook online, because I was able to highlight and use other options to help my learning. I wish there was a little more detail to understand more of the concept. I was fine with having the reading fully online because it was easy to access other materials on the website also.

the book was super easy to read and I never had trouble using the website.

unsatisfied with the cost of the text.

Mindtap does a fantastic job at presenting the material in a very linear fashion which helps me a lot. I appreciate the creative questions on the tests as it gets me to thinking in ways I wasn't before. I believe it was worth the $80, and I've taken quite a few online (and in person) classes at Lane. This program would have been preferred in at least 2 of my other online classes that I can think of. My only qualm was that sometimes, the wording was very confusing on some of the questions as well as the answers. This is something the program creates and I think there are way more pros than cons to the Mindtap software. I believe the lengths were great, when it didn't need to be long they didn't feel the need to fill space and that is incredibly helpful. The sections that were longer than normal, had interesting and pertinant information provided and never felt like busy work.

I think it would be awesome for it to be MindTap only. I used the option of having the book read to me, and that helped SO MUCH considering I hate reading the screen. My only issue was that you gave us options on how to buy our book, instead of saying only Mindtap, so I bought my book on audible and then still had to pay for mindtap. It was kind of annoying, but I looked at the book requirements before the class started and it gave me the option of either or, and since I didn't know what mindtap was, I bought the book online.

I prefer an actual paper book instead of reading online, so I bought one. I like MindTap though because I like knowing right away whether I'm understanding things or not.

I was satisfied with the textbook and the included information. I feel like the textbook was not very long and most of the chapters were fairly short, which made it easier to get through. I don't know if it was worth the 80 dollars, but of course I needed it for the class.

I was fine with the course book, however it was somewhat difficult to read the chapters online versus in a physical book.  This said, I did find it useful to go back to the digital book and search for the information quickly and efficiently, in the search bar.

In the past, when I did not offer extra credit, students frequently asked about extra credit opportunities.  I listened to student feedback and made an extra credit opportunity available to students this term after the midterm exam.  Unfortunately, very few students decided to complete this work.  What OTHER kind of extra credit assignment would you have preferred?  What have you done in OTHER classes at LCC?  Please share your thoughts with me about ANY aspect of the extra credit as it was made available in this class.

Respondent Response

I haven’t participated in hardly any other extra credit work so I am not sure of any other solutions.

I haven't done extra credit in any other classes. I regret not doing the extra credit assignment because now I might receive a D+ in this class which would be very unfortunate.

I usually don't do extra credit opportunities.

I think for your extra credit, it was nice seeing that there was an option. But the extra credit wasn't offered until AFTER the mid term. If you had a few options for extra credit, like a list per say, at the begining of the term that would have help students planned accordingly. Having a paper that is 1200 words due off of a movie is probably why most students didn't do the extra credit. If you implemented short essays maybe up to 3 a term and credit them where at the end whoever did those short essays of 400 plus words earns a total of 10 extra points. Something rather than a fat essay being the extra credit given right after the mid term, or if you do like the idea of the essay, making it available for students to see at the beginning of the term so they can work on the project until it's due.

I haven’t had a lot of extra credit opportunities

I don't really know what other extra credit opportunities I might prefer. Maybe add in a forum for students to interact and engage with each other and give extra credit for that.

Some other classes had an immersion aspect to the extra credit, so we can not only learn about the concept but immerse history to reality. Another extra credit assignment was making up or redoing old assignments one did not do well on.

the extra credit to me was fine and I appreciated it

I didn't have the time to watch a movie and write a paper for such a low extra credit, even though i needed it. HAving a full time schedule through school and working/parenting, I just don't have the time for that when not required.

I wasn't able to fit in time to do the extra credit, but I read it a few times. I wish I had done it to be honest, it seemed do able and interesting. Most extra credit I've been offered online consists of watching movies and writing responses to it. I had one teacher who offered a ton of extra credit but it wasn't worth much for each one and they were short videos with short responses.  This was cool because I was able to get some extra credit instead of missing the only chance we get all term. However, it seems like it would be kind of stressful as far as grading goes for the professors so I always felt bad about that. I've had other professors offer two or three opportunities ranging from movies and essays to short field trips and essays. I've had teachers offer Prezi presentations on a subject for extra credit as well. I personally appreciate any opportunity to do extra credit, it is implied in the name that the professor does not have to offer it.

I actually really liked the extra credit assignment for this class, so I wouldn't change it if I were you.

I do like extra credit opportunities, but with my work schedule I was not able to make the time to watch a movie and write about it. I don't even have time to watch movies in general, sadly. Maybe just an extra set of questions, or research a certain event or person from the reading and write a biography or something.

I would have preferred maybe an easier extra credit option. Looking over the extra credit, I haven't decided to do it yet, but it seems like a complicated piece of work alongside a big time final exam that i have to study for. I've had less work for extra credit before, and it made me more satisfied.

In my opinion, writing a essay for an online history class was a tough ask.  I think that the opportunity is amazing, and I really appreciate the opportunity for it.  However, I personally am taking the online classes because I have very little free time with a baby at home.  I also work two jobs, one full-time and the other part time, so to have to write an essay for the extra credit was not super ideal for me.  Again, I think it is a great thing to offer extra credit, especially for me as I get text anxiety, therefore have a hard time in the cubicles at the testing center, and thus perform more poorly than my understanding of the material suggests.

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day.  In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week.  One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week.  I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less.  For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles.  Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

Respondent Response

I think it is contradicting your “work at your own pace” philosophy if you were to incorporate this. I understand that it is important to have a strong amount of participation from students however if someone Chooses to do all there work at the last minute it is ultimately their decision and will result in lackluster performance and bad habit, however, that is the choice and responsibility of such student.

I think that this would be a great idea to implement. A lot of times I would procrastinate my work until Sunday night and it would make everything a lot more difficult. I wish I would have had a more strict schedule to get certain things done to be more engaged throughout the week.

I have had online classes with mid week deadlines and Sunday deadlines work better.

I think with the material given in the class it was really hard for me to keep up. I think with the due dates students should have the option if they were to turn in their work on YOUR due date then some extra credit could be given to those students. If their work is completed by the normal due date, Sunday, for instance those people who do work etc, will then have until Sunday but just aren't rewarded the little bit of extra credit.

A midweek deadline would have been more difficult but doable

I think any deadline would work for me. I liked to start my reading on Monday and finish everything by Wednesday. I liked to have it done well before it was due.

I like the Sunday deadline just because it allows me to pace myself throughout the week and I don't feel rushed to have something done in the middle of the week especially since I am really busy in my personal life.

I am in between about the proposal because I understand the frustration that people are pushing the assignment towards the deadline & may not register all the information. However, sometimes the weekend is the only time for one to complete the assignment.

I think it would be a good idea because that would help students be more engaged throughout the week.

Deadlines and forced participation sucks, Online should ALWAYS BE AT YOUR OWN PACE!

As a student with a toddler, a partner in school, part time work on the weekends, pre school, and regular daily responsibilities I have found it hard in the past to meet Tuesday deadlines. I have had online classes which do a tuesday/thursday/sunday deadline thing. I've also had a professor do a Wednesday/Saturday deadline. Overall it was just wonky with the rest of my online classes (most due dates are Sunday) and I ended up missing some points on the Tuesday deadline but the Wednesday/Saturday one was easier to do. I'm going into my third year of mostly online and sometimes on campus schooling and I just had to stumble a few times and learn the hard way how to space work out throughout the week. It is a poor way to study, I've performed horribly on tests studying only two or three days a week and it is highly stressful to study this way. It could be helpful to encourage students to develop healthier study habits but it may bring down the grades slightly.

I can't spread the work out. I'm one of those people who has to read everything in one go to retain the info for the test. That wouldn't work for me, anyway.

My schedule most of the time is only open on the weekends. I do have a very limited amount of time in the evenings to read the paper book I purchased while at certain events like kids sports practices, etc. I printed out the final exam study list and took it with me during the last few weeks, along with the book, to make notes as I read.

I say no. I think the once a week, every sunday night is perfect for the deadlines. It's basically just gives you a full week to do it, and I like that.

For me, I fall in to the latter portion of students.  I oppose the proposal, as I have family obligations throughout the week, and I work two jobs.  That being said, multiple deadlines throughout the week would not be beneficial to me at all, and would raise some concern.

Is there any other type of  smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:

#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?
- OR -
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?
Respondent Response

Possibly a quizlet link with the study terms. I copied each term and definition into my own made quizlet flash card set and it seemed so much easier to have an online set of flash cards that you flip through one at a time instead of being overwhelmed by so many terms on each page in the google doc. Just food for thought.

I cant think of any other apps that can contribute in this capacity.

Not that I know of

I think it might be easier to read if it was done on google sheets

No, I do not have any other suggestions for this.

I do not know of any other tool but it may be helpful to help with studying or viewing how other people comprehend the information

none that I can think of.

Honestly, Mindtap was the best I would stick with what works.

No. Sorry. I'm not too tech savvy.

Not to my knowledge.

Khan Academy is somewhat helpful, even if I didn't use it very much. But other than that, I think that the mindtap cengage textbook was enough to learn all the topics.

Not that I am familiar with/think would be extremely beneficial, however I am sure there are many that would be good.

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?

and/or

What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

Respondent Response

Maybe a video introduction of yourself at the beginning of the term. In a couple other online classes I have had the teachers would record a short video of themselves talking over the course, contact info, etc. It just gives the class a more personal touch IMO and gives us a chance to more or less interact with you a little bit beyond the standard email announcements.

I like the idea of there being more homework. More opportunities to raise your grade individually. This course is heavily dependent upon doing well on quizzes and tests, which every class is. However, usually there is more of a chance to make that grade up if you struggle with quizzes and tests. There are opportunities to get really good grades on homework to raise your overall grade.

Taking 101 and 102 in the same term it is hard to study for 200 questions for exams. I would recommend other students to take these courses different terms if possible.

not having to purchase mind tap.

Forums would maybe be useful.

I think a weekly video lecture would help imp this course. Other online courses I’ve taken offer an video lecture at least once  in awhile and I felt I was easier to have an understanding of what the area of study is.

I have no other suggestions for this course.

I think this course was well constructed. I would also recommend a power point presentation to help summarize or understand the concepts better.

I think the class was well done and easy to keep up with

I am not tooting any horns here, this was one of the easiest to understand online courses I have ever taken. The materials were presented clearly, the Moodle page was easy to navigate/read and the information was interesting. No one taught me most of this material in my (Oregon) public high school. Thank you for a great class that will likely impact me forever!

I could only mention the book issue. That was my only true problem.

I like videos from the instructor on courses that I've taken. It kind of makes it feel more like a classroom in a way. I was very impressed with the detail though, and timeliness of this instructors forum posts this course.

Maybe ask more questions about the exams and ask about how students felt about them, and how they did on them.

None that I can think of.
