Since this is a 6 week long summer course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform.  It allowed students to work at their own pace.  Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook.  MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback.  All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (60%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks.  On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.

I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap.  Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.  I'd appreciate your honesty.

How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook?  How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)

Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).

Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

Respondent Response

The textbook was a good investment and I think it helps with all the information that we need in order to excel in this course.

the textbook was easy to use and follow along with it felt right the right amount of information and i like the ability to highlight and take notes that was nice as well. I am unaware of the prices and qualities of all the textbooks available so im not sure im fit to answer whether its worth the money or not that would depend on what the other options are with respect to the price and quality.

I am not a huge fan of Cengage just because of the way they layout their books and how you have to navigate the site. I really like VitalSourse, however, so that might be an option to look into!

The textbook provided enough detail, but it was too wordy, and long. The price wasn't bad although the website could be finicky. The organization was shaky but not bad.

I think $80 was fairly reasonable for what sort of materials we got from the book/mindtap. The Cengage website was really easy to use and how it was set up even made reading the text book kind of fun. I like paperback copies better than online, but that was more expensive, this was the easiest online textbook I've used so far, in terms of learning from it. I liked the option to have it read out loud, especially if I couldn't pronounce a word or something. I accidentally purchased the wrong course at the beginning of the term and  Cengage customer service fixed it for me soon after I messaged them, for sure worth $80.

I thought that MindTap was great. The text book can even be read to you (something I used when I had a migraine and couldn't deal with looking at the screen. Over all I thought it was great.

I felt that the value of the online text book was well worth the price paid.  I really liked the "read it out loud to me" feature, I used that quite a bit.  I also found the MindTap app very useful so that I could listen to the chapters while on the go.  I tried using the highlighting tools, but for me it was more useful to print the pages and highlight or add notes by hand.  I liked that the check your knowledge activities let you have three tries and gave clear explanations for the answers.  The one suggestion I would have to improve the course is to add more video clips or short films.  As a visual learner, I did find the few video clips and the colorful images and maps helpful.

In the past, when I did not offer extra credit, students frequently asked about extra credit opportunities.  I listened to student feedback and made an extra credit opportunity available to students this term after the midterm exam.  Unfortunately, very few students decided to complete this work.  What OTHER kind of extra credit assignment would you have preferred?  What have you done in OTHER classes at LCC?  Please share your thoughts with me about ANY aspect of the extra credit as it was made available in this class.

Respondent Response

I think the extra credit given was very good and appreciated by all students.

This one was great.

i think it would be more motivating to a student to know how much this extra credit could be worth

Maybe something more fun and engaging than a paper, since for many other classes we have mandatory papers to complete. Something like a project or recording a lecture on our favorite topic we learned about would be fun!

Do a more accessible project

I liked watching the movie for extra credit, it was a fun way to earn extra credit. I think a few extra credit type of forum posts would be cool, being able to share and respond to classmates about a historical event or idea they enjoyed learning about.

I didn't do the extra credit but that is mostly due to my getting ill in week 5 and just not having the spoons for it (and I m ok with my grade so I didn't stress myself with it)

For me personally, I chose not to do the extra credit because I am happy with the grade I am receiving in the class.  I also felt that with my schedule these last couple weeks I would not have been able to give the extra credit the attention that it deserved to get a good grade.  I do however,  appreciate the option to do extra credit.

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day.  In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week.  One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week.  I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

How do you initially rate this proposal?

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less.  For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles.  Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

Respondent Response

I think it sets a good time line and boundary for learning the material but it is also so so helpful to have the entire chapter open and able to complete right away if necessary

I as a procrastinator would not like this it seems much simpler to me only having one day everything is due by also makes it easier to stay organized.

I am a fan of two deadlines throughout the week. I think as long as you put it in the syllabus and students are aware of the deadlines from the beginning, they should be able to work around them.

The mid-week deadlines would make the class significantly harder and less flexible. The main problem Wouldnt be fixed ether, students would just do everything at the begging of the week instead.

I personally switched between what days I would complete the mindtap work each week since my work schedule varied, it is helpful to have a Sunday deadline just so you have a whole week to be thinking about when you'll do the work based on your schedule. Some people also work better under the stress that procrastination gives them, I used to be that way so I think that is important to consider.

I think more deadlines would help others. I on the other hand tend to do my work as I go so I don't need them.

I do agree that completing the exercises throughout the week is the best practice for studying, however it is not always practical for all students.  There were a couple weeks that it may have appeared that I did all the activities in one or two days, but I did take advantage of the "read to me" feature on the MindTap app so I could listen to the chapter a couple times before I was able to log in and complete the activities.

#1 would be cool and/or useful for me to implement for future students in this history class?

#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?

What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

Maybe giving more outside videos to watch besides just the textbook for learning the material

Your communication with us was great and helpful. Thank you for showing interest in your work and giving us updates on deadlines. Thanks for a great course. Just wish i would have performed well on the final... don't know what happened :/

I actually thought the structure of this course was really great. I would only suggest looking into formats different than Cengage, which I mentioned earlier!

Your all good.

I feel like the survey covers everything it should, maybe more videos to watch though each week, I love being able to watch videos, especially crash course.

I think the class went well, I have suggestions.

The only suggestion, as I mentioned above, would be me more video clips or short films for us visual learners.
