Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included all important class dates, such as MindTap deadlines, video quiz deadlines, and extra credit and exam deadlines?
NOTE: I am talking about officially subscribing to the Google calendar, which provides you with automatic updates and reminders. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Since this is an accelerated, late start 5 week long course, which required a full 10 week term of materials to be included, I made the decision to use the Cengage MindTap platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace. Being an online class, all required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook. MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap. Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific. I'd appreciate your honesty.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I honestly never used the actual online textbook unless there was something I needed to see in order to complete my coursework. In general, I like Cengage and MindTap and I think they're great tools for teaching an asynchronous class effectively. I will say that the auto-calculated engagement score the MindTap provides isn't very accurate. |
I loved having a paper textbook, made taking notes easier. I'm still struggling with online learning. |
personally i like paper copies better than reading online, but I did like using mindtap. It was easy to use and not overwhelming with a lot of questions. |
The organization and the layout of the textbook were great. With the amount that the textbook cost I think it was worth it for the class. |
| I think MindTop was not that useful, I prefer regular e-books because you can research historical people or place easily. Which leads better understanding of this course. | |
I think even though it costs money, it was a very important part of this class. It had a lot of information that would otherwise be needed which is why I understand that most courses require additional textbook costs. |
I was very satisfied with the textbook it was very easy to read |
It a good textbook. |
The online textbook was affordable and reliable. |
| Overall,
I was very satisfied with the cost,
quality, and readability of the
textbook. I felt as if there was a
sufficient amount of information and the
readings provided me with the
information I needed to complete the
understanding checks. I felt as if the
price was understandable, seeing as
there are textbooks almost three times
the price of that. I did use the
flashcard feature, although I did not
have the material read out to me,
considering that I feel as if I
comprehend better when I read it myself
instead of hearing the information. |
I particularly enjoy having the textbook read to me because it gives me time to write stuff down without having to stop reading every couple of minutes. |
I thought the online software was easy to use and I liked being able to have 3 chances to get a higher score on the check your understanding portions. |
Only criticism I have is that there were several instances where I felt the answers that were expected in the Mindtap weekly quizzes and tests were not accurate. Or the question was about something not covered in the book text. Happened 3 or 4 times. The problem resulted in Mindtap giving me a B grade on two chapter tests where I felt I deserved an A. I was given credit by the professor for those questions, which I appreciated. But if a person's overall grade could go down by an entire letter due to mistakes by Mindtap, it seems like they might want to go over the tests and fix any problems. That was really my only criticism. |
I am not a big fan of only reading, but I feel that the book provided me tons of information I ended up enjoying and being very interested in. I learned a lot from the book, but even so I would not spend $80 extra for MindTap for five weeks again. |
The platform and textbook need to be reviewed for accuracy. |
I hate reading a textbook from a computer. I love hard copies and paper. All of my past online courses all had physical copies of textbooks. But it was also nice how mind tap would just auto populate the chapters due in each week as well as all the due tasks. I do not think I got a good deal out of paying the 80 dollars from a book on a computer. I would prefer to pay the 80 dollars and have the book in hand. |
The $80 price was high however, I loved that I only had to go to one place to access both my required reading and my assignments. |

Due to COVID-19, EVERY class at Lane has been "transformed" into some sort of remote/online class.
I am interested in your input on the use of Zoom, the online video conferencing tool. As I see it, there is a wide range of uses for this tool, from no use, to minimal, to occasional, to frequent, AND from optional to required.
LOW USE - For years, I have used Zoom as a way for my online students to meet online for virtual office hours, instead of having to come to my office on campus. I continued offering that option this term and enjoyed the conversations with students who utilized the opportunity.
MEDIUM USE - I have spoken to some of my social science department colleagues at Lane who have used Zoom more frequently, at least once a week, for optional gatherings of students to meet and discuss the subject matter.
HIGH USE - On the far end of the Zoom spectrum, I have also spoken with some of my former students who are now at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. They had mandatory Zoom meetings, two to three times each week, on specific (but regular) days and times throughout the entire term. Some were required to attend these mandatory meetings for multiple courses. One was taking four courses and had scheduled Zoom meetings for all four, every day, every week.
Which of the following scenarios would you most likely prefer?

You can
use this space to explain your answer in a
bit more detail than the choices listed
above. If you did have a class where
an instructor used Zoom in a way other than
I did, feel free to share how that either
worked or did not work for you. In
short, provide any Zoom-related information
here that might help me to determine how to
better use it to serve future students.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
Due to working full time I've only taken asynchronous classes. For students that are heavily motivated not using zoom works well but it should be an option for students that have a harder time learning alone. |
I have much prefrerred in-person learning rather than remote learning. I just have not had an easy time with remembering to do work throughout the week rather than all at one. |
this gives students motivation to really learn the curriculum |
I like the once a week zoom meeting because it gave us the chance to ask any questions and get immediate feedback, which I found helpful. |
| I believe having strict deadlines for myself cause me to overthink and over-worry about what happens when and where, but too lax leaves me open to procrastinate. This middle ground is where I believe I may not have the best mental state, but the best output. This is my personal experience with online related courses. | |
| I think I would find less interesting in the zoom of history. This is only because I prefer to study when I want to | |
I prefer a bit of the option that I chose and a bit of the statement under it. I think it is a good idea to have zoom once a week in order to have a community and feel like a normal in-person class (even though its remote), however I know some people are busy so maybe just for students who want extra help or are inclined to use zoom. |
It worked well for me |
Requiring zoom meetings defeats the point of an online class which is to discard the rigidity of classroom meetings and allow students to work at their own pace. |
I don't focus on zoom very well. |
| I am not able to give much insight on my other online courses, seeing as they have all been asynchronous, without any zooms. | |
I work full time and attend class full time so unfortunately mandatory Zoom isn't really a viable option for me as I most likely wouldn't be able to attend. |
| For online classes I prefer zoom to be optional but still available to use as a way to meet and ask questions. | |
I have not taken a Zoom-based class yet. But for a history class like this, I would probably prefer a class where the instructor lectured on Zoom once or twice a week and the students could either watch live and possibly interact by asking questions, or watch the recorded video later. |
If I do an online class I prefer no zoom, I feel less engaged than in person and have less work ethic after spending a lot of time one zoom. |
| Sine covid has changed our lives I love the minimal use of zoom. I think it would be very helpful if the first week of each term had a mandatory zoom meeting so you could screenshare with the class how to complete task, how to operate Cengage, how to Moodle message you, and at least get to see each other's faces one time. But after the first week I think that the zoom option should remain minimal. | |
I appreicate your flexibility with this class. It is hard when a professor has an online class with required zoom meeting times. I love the flexibility of being able to access you via zoom if need be. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less. For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles. Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
Midweek deadlines cause me confusion and I find it difficult to find time to fit them into my schedule. I complete all the assignments on Sunday before they're due but I also read through the lesson contents throughout the week. |
I am a big procrastinator. I always leave things to the last minute. I need the structure built for me so I know to go and do the work at these times. Otherwise, I forget... |
i think you need to chill. |
especially for people taking a lot of credits its easier to have one due date a weak. This is better since it is an accelerated term. |
Having multiple due dates could affect some people, but I do think a due date maybe once in the middle of the week wouldn't be to bad for most people. |
For me this term was intense. I took a lot of credits and I spent less time in history, so I would say I would be grateful if we have extended the deadline sometime. |
I do not mind additional deadlines, I think this would make a lot of people more organized and space their work out. It would personally help with my procrastination habits I believe. |
A lot of people taking online classes like myself are also working full time, the end of the week deadline helps me balance work and school |
Neutral because their are pros and cons that depend on the student's specific circumstances. |
I like having the deadlines on sunday because I work and go to school. |
Overall, I agree that mid-week deadlines would naturally increase participation throughout the week. I know that if I had more mid-week deadlines, I would participate in my courses more often throughout the week. Although, coming from someone who works continuously throughout the week, and tends to only have weekends off, if that, I really appreciate being able to complete all of my work in my free time on the weekends. I feel as if I were to have mid-week deadlines, I would accidentally miss deadlines due to a busy schedule. |
Personally I have no issue with participation; deadlines are deadlines and people are going to have to find a way to make it work regardless. |
For me I like to work throughout the week and then use the weekends to finish all of my school work. Its easier for me if all my classes have assignments due at the end of the week. |
I agree that it's probably better to study history by accessing the material throughout the week rather than all at once. (I'm not an expert about it, but I assume it's easier to remember stuff if you take it bit by bit, rather than read a huge chunk all in one sitting.) In general I'd support multiple due dates throughout the week. But in a fast paced class like this one, where no late work is accepted, I wonder if more due dates might have bad results, especially if something unexpected happens to the student that keeps him from doing school work for a few days. I was in the hospital for 4 days early this term, before the half-term history 102 class got started. I was admitted Monday and discharged Thursday, so if the class had been in session during that week, I could have gotten out of the hospital and then done the reading on the weekend and taken the tests, without any problems. It would have been more of a problem if there had been due dates during the week, and if no late work could have been accepted even due to a hospital stay, that really would have been disastrous. So I do like the idea of multiple due dates, but there could be drawbacks. |
I would normally complete it all in one day due to limited time I have. I could make it work, but it would be harder for me personally. I like it though. |
Students are not going to learn more just because there's a new deadline. The student's should have the ability to have one simple deadline, and if they're performance ends up being poor because they failed to do the extra study, that's their own damn fault. It's not the job of the instructor to hold their hand along the way like a little baby. And on the flip side having multiple deadlines may very well kill some students' performance. I think having several deadlines is a terrible idea. |
I am one of the individuals who works two jobs and goes to school fulltime, so I feel that that the Sunday deadlines are very generous and helpful in order for me to reach my success. The one thing that was hard for me was to take the midterm exams within the two-day two-hour time period. One of my midterms I had to take at work, and it was an added stress I wish I did not have to experience. I know a lot of other online classes allow for an exam to be open for a week or 5 days and I feel that that would be a little more helpful. |
Personally, I feel that having one deadline made it simple and gave no excuse not to have work turned in on time. |

Is there any other type of smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (OTHER than the shared Google Doc we used for the midterm and final study lists) that:
#2 might be helpful for learning or studying historical information covered in this class?

I enjoy Cengage. |
I haven't used any other app, so I would not know what I could add... |
I am not familiar with those app |
There are quite a few study apps on the iPhone app store that help with studying, where you can make your own flashcards, make mock tests, and other things. |
Unfortunately, I do not know of very many web-based tools or apps that would assist future students of this history class, although a website/ app that I utilize a lot, when studying, is quizlet. |

I used a laptop and an Android tablet for this course this term. |

No that I know of. |

I assume that most students have been taking online/distant/Zoom-based classes at LCC since the COVID-19 shutdown in March of 2020. Instead of taking an in-person class (some sections were first made available this Winter 2022 term) or a Zoom-based class (with required Zoom meeting days and times), you chose to take this fully online class (no required meetings).
I am aware that online classes offer a convenience that other classes do not. This has always been the case, even before COVID-19. I'm interested in your feedback and some questions to consider are:
- Do you consider online classes to be "just as good" as classroom and/or Zoom-based courses?
- If LCC reopened the campus 100%, would you consider enrolling in any classroom-based courses?
- What differences do
you see or preferences you have when it
comes to taking the traditional MWF or
TuTh classroom courses and the any-time,
any-day (asynchronous) online type of
courses?
Please share ANYTHING else that you consider important or ANY insights you have gained from your "distant" educational experiences of the last two years. I'd like to know for myself, but decision-makers at LCC also need to hear from students as they decide what kind of educational institution they should be moving forward. (As of this moment, LCC plans to offer only 50% of the classroom-based course sections that it offered prior to the pandemic shutdown, by next fall term, which is 6 months from now.)

I've only taken college classes online so I don't have the best insight into this topic. |
| Online classes for me are much more difficult than in-person classes. I believe that classroom courses are far better than online, at least, for college. I would absolutely enroll in a classroom course as soon as they are available. | |
I think online classes are basically the same as zoom based courses. Regardless of having a teacher or meeting through a screen, a lot of the work will be done alone |
I think online classes are better since I can plan and study on my own time. But if campus were to open up again I would probably take in person classes for that verbal engagement. |
I believe that online classes are "just as good" as traditional classroom, but approached in a more digitized way. For me personally, I do have the option of going to Lane in-person but I opt out due to various personal matters that would make it harder at the current moment to go physically. I would consider heavily to go to in-person, due to my belief of myself that I succeed more in a physical environment rather than my eyes onto a computer screen. |
although I said Zoom-based classes are better, I realized that in in-person classes, it would be easier to make study buddies in the class. which motivates us in some ways. maybe you would want to have a group chat about this course so that everyone can ask questions each other. |
I am looking to return to in person classes in the future. I think online classes are convenient but I think I thrive more in in-person classes. I do like remote classes because of the convenience, but I am excited to be back in a class setting, because I haven't been in a classroom since March 2020. |
I believe that with the right instructor an online class can be even better than an in person class |
Online classes are just as good. I would consider enrolling in classroom classes but only if their was no online zoom-free option. Online courses have much more freedom but also allow for more procrastination. |
Online classes were easy to build a schedule around. |
I
consider online classes to be just as
effective as classroom and/or
Zoom-based courses. I really
appreciate the flexibility that is
provided by the online course
schedule. I appreciated that students,
including myself, were able to learn
at their own pace and still complete
work within a specific time frame. If
LCC reopened the campus 100%, I would
definitely consider taking in-person
courses on campus, seeing as my major
requires that. With all asynchronous
courses, I was able to balance school,
work, and soccer much easier and was
able to have a more flexible work
schedule. |
Personally, I don't mind distance learning. It helps make working possible while I attend school. However one aspect I think I missed out on was socialization. I didn't really form any attachment to my college or my work--it all sort of just became more work to get done. |
The only thing I like more about online classes is the convenience. In person classes are way better for learning and asking questions. I think LCC should reopen 100%. |
This is my first term taking online-based classes, and the two classes I took were writing and history. I don't have enough experience to know whether online classes are better or worse than traditional classrooms in every kind of class. I suspect some classes are better for online teaching than others. I have yet to see how an online class works if it is a math class or some other class that involves more than just a lot of reading and tests. I thought the online version worked better with history this past term than with writing. |
I take CTE course in person such as my photography class, then take my prerequisites fully online. I prefer courses like this for online only for both time purposes and personal importance. |
1. Not even in the slightest. 2. No, because most of the staff and students will probably have been vaccinated, and I have not. Vaccines have a long list of both known and unknown side effects, and until I'm convinced otherwise, I will not be alone in a room with vaccinated people. The government's done a great job at segregating society, hasn't it? 3. The online courses are far less effective and completing them is far less valuable. |
I personally took classes online and in person before covid moved us to all remote learning. I love the half and half. I like having a mild routine of getting up and coming to school. But I also love just rolling out of bed and opening my computer to "go to school". This term I did the same thing. I took two in person classes, all of which were science classes. And I took two online courses, which were entirely online. I think online can be just as effective as in person classes. I think this because we as students can put forth the same effort, we do in a classroom in order to be successful online. But I do agree some classes are really hard online. |
I have never taken a class on campus. If I had the option I would always choose online classes. The convenience is something that makes it possible for me to go to school with a family and a job. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
As far as I can see, there isn't another question that I could suggest... |
| as I mentioned in another form, I think it would be better if you have a group chat for all classmates so that they could motivate each other. | |
Can't think of any questions |
No recommendations. |
I
can't think of any questions I may
have asked that were not asked
already. Although, I don't have many
recommendations on how to improve this
course. I liked how the class was
formatted and I felt as if the
workload was very appropriate. |
I thought it was a pretty good course. Other than getting Mindtap to fix mistakes in the tests, I have no recommendations. |
I wish there was more warning (maybe there was and I just did not see) about how fast and how much workload this course has. I only would not recommend because of how much focus you need to have on these chapters. |
One thing I would suggest is making it mandatory for students to participate in the study guide for exams. I did find it a bit frustrating that only myself and what appeared to be one other student were the main contributors. |
