Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included important class dates, such as Achieve deadlines, LCC deadlines, and extra credit and exam deadlines?
NOTE: Subscribing to the Google calendar provides automatic updates and reminders to your smartphone or computer. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Students were required to use the Macmillan Achieve platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace during the week. Being an online class, most required materials were included in Achieve, including the textbook. Achieve had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the Achieve activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
This term, students had a unique opportunity to access the required course materials for free. The normal price for the ebook and Achieve website access would have been approximately $50 for the term.
This textbook is NOT the textbook I have been using for the past several years. The subject matter covered in this course is the same regardless of textbook choice, but part of my decision in making the change was because it would be free to students.
THEREFORE, please feel free to give me your honest evaluation, both good and bad, concerning the TEXTBOOK portion of Achieve.
With your feedback, and that of all students enrolled in the course, I may or may not continue to use this textbook and Achieve website for my future online students. Use this space to provide me with any relevant comments on your Achieve textbook experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $50 price (if you had been required to pay for it), whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature.
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I think that the textbook was useful. The students didn't have to pay for it which is always nice but I also find myself preferring digital text books. It makes it easier to just carry a laptop with you and be able to access the reading with little struggle instead of trying to find a way to set up a text book where you can see it while you work on your laptop or pc. |
I was very satisfied and found it very easy to read |
I felt the textbook was very helpful for being successful in this course and understanding the information. |
| nope it was rellrdely well but together after i got the hang of the website | |
Achieve is lazy for a collage class, great for somone who is wanting to learn in a solo situation, however people are paying money for instruction from a teacher... |
I found the website regularly had issues connecting. That is the only negative I can find. I found the text readable and easy to annotate, although I found taking hand written notes to the text helped more. I would think $50 is extremely worth it for this resource, I prefer online text to physical text, the highlight was helpful, but I ended up not using it as much as taking physical notes to better review from. |
I never used the textbook portion of achieve but I loved having the ebook on my bookshelf, I was able to download it to my iPad and read it during my breaks at work. I enjoyed highlighting passages too, it makes it easier to look for important info before exams. |
I really appreciated not having to pay for a textbook for this course. |
| I thought the textbook was ok. I wish it had a search function. | |
Honestly, I liked the Mindtap system better. My main problem with both Mindtap and Achieve was the fact that there were too many badly created questions in the weekly quizzes that could affect a person's grade. With Achieve, I felt there was often at least one question in the weekly quizzes that was so badly written that the student only had a random chance of getting it correct, which of course meant that it was nearly impossible to get a 100 percent for the week even if you studied hard and knew the material. It takes away from the fun and enjoyment of a course when you know your weekly points may not accurately or fairly reflect your understanding of the material we were studying. I do expect to get a pretty good grade in the course even with these problems, so it didn't affect my grade too adversely. And I did enjoy the course overall. But the problems still affected my overall experience. I felt the course text was biased politically to the left. I remember in one chapter where it talked about Margaret Thatcher, the analysis seemed so negative it didn't seem fair or balanced. Also the text in one chapter referred to abortion as "safe", and this was followed by a question on the weekly quiz where the correct answer also referred to abortion as "safe." And so the student basically had to agree that abortion is "safe" to get a good grade on the question. In this instance I thought maybe the textbook could have been more respectful of the fact that there are differing viewpoints on certain issues, and could have been more aware that there are some ways of presenting material and questions on quizzes that people could potentially find offensive. Especially if it's a hot button issue. I just think these textbooks could be more politically neutral, or at least acknowledge that there is an ongoing societal debate on certain issues, where both sides have thoughtful and nuanced opinions. This would be better than leaning too far to one political side and presenting that side's view as settled fact, while being completely insensitive to and even disrespectful of the views and feelings of people who hold differing views. |
I really enjoyed this textbook |
Overall I liked the textbook. I think the book was well formatted and engaging compared to other history textbooks I have read through. I didn't really like the notes section as there was no way to organize your notes, it just put them in chronological order. I also had 2-3 quiz questions that came from earlier chapters, and didn't match the current reading, so that was slightly frustrating. Other than that, I did like how all the assignments and reading was in one place, which kept me organized. In conclusion, I would pay 50$ for this program for future semesters. |
I was satisfied with both the quality and information. There was plenty of coverage. I thought it was a cool feature to be able to take notes and highlight on the screen as you were reading. Overall, I think it is a very great use of technology. |
I
loved that I didn't have to pay to
view the book or just the program. I
think its ridiculous to charge extra
for that |
The textbook this term was super glitchy but I would say still worth it for being free. If it's going to cost $50 after this term I hope they will fix a lot of the glitchiness. |
The textbook was very helpful, some stuff I had to use search engines to find as it was not to its full potential on information. The textbook was helpful, better than having to pay for it as usual. |

Almost every week, I provided full videos (from the LCC library streaming website) of varying lengths for students to watch.
Normally, in the face-to-face courses I teach, we don't have the time to watch full videos in the classroom. Instead, I show shorter clips from the longer, full-length documentaries that I personally watch and edit in preparation for this class. While these clips are more specific to the lecture and a particular section of the textbook, along they cannot provide the "bigger picture" or overall view that a long, full-length documentary can. Since there are no lectures and required meetings in this asynchronous, online class, I decided to require that students watch the "full videos".
Overall, what role did
these weekly videos play in your
understanding of the course materials?

Do you have any other feedback for me concerning the use and requirement of these videos?
- Was it helpful that
you were able to pause and/or rewatch
these videos?
- Were you able to take notes, see how the video related to the textbook, and easily determine the main purpose or message or concept being presented?
- After watching each video, did you come away clearly understanding the reason why it was assigned?
- The videos came from different sources/narrators/production dates. Did you have a favorite or two? Where there any that you definitely did not like? Be as specific as you can.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I believe that the videos were helpful in many circumstances to give more information that may not have been present in the ebook readings. |
It was helpful to be able to watch the videos on our own time. Yes Yes I didn't really have a favorite but if I had to pick the film about the revolution was pretty good. |
it was cool when i took your history class in the fall we had to do test on the video's this term I like having no test on the videos I watch them to help me understand the material more instead of focusing on preparing for a quiz on them |
Frankly, I didn't use the videos in this course. I watched a few towards the beginning of the term, but found reading the text more in depth was a better resource for me. |
I don't believe I watched a single one. The reading was more than enough information. |
Because every quiz/test was so reliant on the textbook, the videos were only helpful as a supplementary resource, not necessarily needed to to well in the course. |
I enjoyed all the videos that I watched, but I especially enjoyed watching the World War I video, which had soldiers, their wives, and members of former ruling royal houses as interviewees who gave their thoughts on the war. |
The videos helped enforce that we read |
I enjoyed the videos and found they gave me a good overview of each topic before reading the chapter. |
No extra feedback. Personally thought they served their purpose.
To
be perfectly honest, I really only
watched a few videos. My attention
span doesn't work well with videos |
I think they were helpful and I enjoyed them all. I liked the video quizzes you did last year as they gave me an idea of what to take notes on. I was a little lost this term on what to jot down from the videos. Aside from that I enjoyed them and felt they supplemented my learning. |
Being able to pause and rewatch was helpful. |

Due to COVID-19, nearly every class at Lane has been "transformed" into some sort of remote/hybrid/online class.
I am interested in your input on the use of Zoom, the online video conferencing tool. As I see it, there is a wide range of uses for this tool, from no use, to minimal, to occasional, to frequent, AND from optional to required.
LOW USE - For years, I have used Zoom as a way for my online students to meet online for virtual office hours, instead of having to come to my office on campus. I continued offering that option this term and enjoyed the conversations with students who utilized the opportunity.
MEDIUM USE - I have spoken to some of my social science department colleagues at Lane who have used Zoom more frequently, at least once a week, for optional gatherings of students to meet and discuss the subject matter.
HIGH USE - On the far end of the Zoom spectrum, I have also spoken with some of my former students who are now at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. They had mandatory Zoom meetings, two to three times each week, on specific (but regular) days and times throughout the entire term. Some were required to attend these mandatory meetings for multiple courses.
Which of the following scenarios would you most likely prefer?

You can use this space to explain your answer in a bit more detail than the choices listed above. If you did have a class where an instructor used Zoom in a way other than I did, feel free to share how that either worked or did not work for you. In short, provide any Zoom-related information here that might help me to determine how to better use it to serve future students.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
| I found that especially in this class things were straight forwards and understandable but in some circumstances and some other classes it can be hard to understand what a professor is asking for in a particular assignments without some better form of communication. | |
I enjoyed the full online version due to my busy weekly schedule |
I think a weekly zoom would be good for students to drop in and ask any questions they may have. |
| have the meating once a week but it is up to the student to go to it if they need help but not make it require to partake in the meeting | |
| I don't chose to be in an online setting, COVID makes that disision for me. I dont appreceate having to compromise my own learning tactics for the convenience of the online instructors. | |
I would like to interact with my classmates at least once a week to talk about topics and compare thoughts. It would better help grasp some of the harder topics and see things from a different point of view. |
The classes where I was required to join a zoom meeting rarely left me better prepared for the quizzes considering all the info is generally in the reading or assigned videos. I also like online classes because of my busy schedule and find that doing the readings and assignments at my own pace makes my life easier. |
| I took a class where it was required to log on to zoom a few times a week during set hours. The reason why I take online courses is to have the connivence to do the work on my own time. By requiring set times with zoom it defeats the purpose of an all online class. | |
I strongly dislike online-only courses and wish that all courses that were online had the same amount of class time (via zoom) as an in-person class. |
I feel like there's something missing in online courses when it comes to interaction with the instructor and other students. So in normal circumstances I'd support the idea of meetings via Zoom. Maybe you could require watching the meetings but not necessarily at the exact time that the live meeting took place. What bothers me is that I'll have some issue that prevents me from meeting at a specific time. Both this term and last term I had stuff happen to me outside college that could not be avoided, that would have been much worse if it had coincided with some deadline that couldn't be bent. So I tend to favor fewer deadlines and requirements in the week, since the more there are, the higher the chance I'll miss a deadline due to something unavoidable. |
It would be nice to get someone explain some things out loud |
For some classes I liked having regular Zoom meetings or meeting in person. However I found this class pretty straightforward, so I don't think I would benefit from either style of meeting in this case. I also enjoy having a hybrid class schedule, with some fully online classes and some fully in person classes anyway. Regular in person classes keep me on track throughout the week, but also having some online classes allows me to have more work availability. |
I personally like working completing remote and having feedback either emailed or posted on Moodle. |
I
prefer using Moodle messaging and not
wasting time with a zoom call. With my
schedule, planning things is not ideal
or easy. I strongly dislike mandatory
zoom sessions or meetings. |
A class would be nice as conversation about the topics would probably be helpful in learning them. But, I personally don't find zoom lectures very helpful, as I know myself and many others are more reluctant to contribute when behind a screen. But having it as an option would be nice, although the office hours this term were fine as well. |
This class had all materials needed and did not have use for a use of zoom other than personal help with the professor. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/Achieve on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises, LearningCurve, and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred method of study would be to include several due dates (for starting the LearningCurve and completing the other quizzes) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or maybe just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for completing the LearningCurve and Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would
force them to participate more during the
week and procrastinate less. For
others, due to family, work, or other
obligations, midweek deadlines might impose
true obstacles. Please use this space
to explain your support or opposition to the
proposal to add midweek deadlines to this
course.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I would be against early week due dates like Tuesday and Wednesday but Thursday or Friday due dates would be more understandable and I wouldn't mind those. It gives you some time, but still prevents you from doing the work at the end of the week. |
I feel like having the option to cram on the weekend is helpful for those who have prior obligations during the week. EX. work and or families |
I support multiple deadlines because it holds all of the students accountable to get on and do a little bit of school work everyday rather than all of it in one day. |
I preferred the Sunday deadlines |
Creating roadblocks for people to get through isn't going to produce better learning. Be more engaged with your students and dont relly on an online program to teach people if you are conserned with the amount of time that they are spending studying before compleating the assignments. |
As someone who works full time and with multiple classes that chose Sunday as their deadline day for things, it could be helpful but I think implementing a zoom lecture about the reading during the week where we need to be prepared with having read the required chapter would be more helpful. |
I work mon-fri so if I have to priorities assignments with weekday due dates over weekend, I would usually do the reading during the week and the assignments on the weekend, or if I wasn't tired I'd have them done after work on a Monday, so ultimately I much prefer the Sunday deadline but having it due split up on the weekday would just add to my schedule. |
One deadline is more conivent for me. I have two small children and work so adding multiple due days is more of a challenge. |
Multiple due dates make life more complicated. If this were combined with live zoom lectures I would have no issue with multiple deadlines because of the increased involvement with the class. |
As I explained above, I would normally favor more deadlines in the week because it would discourage procrastination. But I have issues in personal life that I worry would spell disaster for my college career if there were too many deadlines. So I think one or 2 deadlines in a week is enough. |
That would be great in a traditional setting. But the point of online classes (under normal circumstances) is to be able to work at your own pace. Also, some of do better spacing out the reading and then doing all the assignments at once. My grades reflected this. |
This might work ok for me, depending on my work schedule. I could foresee issues arising if most of my shifts were scheduled earlier in the week and I couldn't get to homework until the weekend. |
I am neutral. However, I think it is best to leave it as it is just for the purpose of accessibility. |
| I have always
been one to study and do homework in one
day. I also may look at the material
early on and do all the homework later.
I do no draw out my study time. I focus
on what is important and move on. If
there were midweek deadlines, I would
not have taken this class due to my
schedule. That goes for any classes |
| I believe this would cause much more stress to people. I typically do all my work at the end of the week because that is what my schedule allows. I still manage to divide it in a way that has been successful in helping me get a good grade. I think it just depends on the person. | |
While that idea has good intentions, some people have work that they juggle with school and adding more deadlines would not be right for them. |

Moodle Website Organization
In Moodle, I used a "folder view" style of class which treated each week as its own collapsible and expandable folder. Within each week, your tasks were organized into two categories: #1 reading/viewing and, #2 assignments to "turn in". In this course, you were provided with links that took you "OUT" of Moodle to class materials located in Google Docs and to the Achieve website (with its own login). These external links also took you to videos located on the LCC Library streaming server and required a separate login. Finally, I provided students with a course deadline calendar that was both subscribable and available as a pop-up webpage (with specific dates and times), to go along with the more generic weekly "calendars" that only included "due Sunday".
In short, I'd like to know how well (or not) this course organization, and linking to resources "outside" of Moodle worked for you. Have you taken another course where the instructor has done something different that you preferred? Was this course organized better/clearer than others you may have taken? Do you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for improvements?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
The way that moodle was organized here worked well for me, simple and not over cluttered. Some of my classes post a very large amount of sources and such in moodle and stuff can get lost in the pile easily, especially when you need to go back to previous weeks to find something in moodle that you need for the most recent weeks. |
I feel like it was very organized and easy to navigate |
I loved how everything in this course was listed on one space and very easy to read and understand as a student. |
I think the moodle page was well organized and doesn't need any changing. |
this work really nice |
moodle is fine and overall your page is fine since all of the work is on a seprate online program. The only orginization that I found quite odd was how the syllabus was located inside of a document and not just posted on the moodle page. |
I liked having the calendar to use on my phone to keep track of deadlines. I also like having everything in one spot so assignments and tracking what I'm doing is easier. |
I rarely looked at the folders besides around exam time, I liked that the main info that I used was the first thing I see when I load up this classes page. |
I loved the way your Moodle was laid out. Very clear and easy to understand. |
I generally accessed the class without first going to the moodle page. |
I thought the course was organized nicely. My main problems had to do with issues in the Achieve system itself. |
The organization was great |
I think this course was organized very well and it was easy to understand what my course assignments were for the week. |
It was very simplistic and easy to understand the course organization. It was easy to access and get to what you needed to. |
I
liked the week files to view one at a
time. I did not sync my calendars
because I have enough on mine already
and added homework was only going to
make it harder to view for important
appts or for my extra work hours. |
This is perfect and a lot better than many other courses I have taken. Many teachers try to divide things up by the unit or next class and it ends up being more frustrating and confusing. Dividing things weekly helps people know what they need to do in the week, and when they need to do it by. I also liked how the Achieve button was at the top of the class. |
Organization was well. While I did not use the google calendar provided (well subscribe to it), I did check it when needed. The links all worked fine as well. |

Achieve Website Organization
As I stated earlier, this was the very first time I have assigned Achieve to my students. Unless you have used Achieve before for any of your other classes, using their website was a new experience.
How well, or not, did the Achieve website work for you? Was it easy to navigate or more challenging to manage. Were the weekly assignments clearly organized and easy to find and complete? Did the website "behave" the way you would expect it to work when clicking various links.
NOTE: I'll be sharing your anonymous feedback with Macmillan, the publisher of Achieve, as a way of "thanking them" for the free use of their textbook and website this term. Still, they want to know what improvements they can make, so be honest with your compliments and criticisms.

One thing that I found rather confusing and maybe this is on my end, if you control click on a windows laptop or pc to open up one of the documents in another page it will still open the first page. I was trying to open two windows or more, one window would always have the original page that list all the work of the week and the other pages would be where I opened up the work itself. When I tried this the original page would change anyways and so you couldn't really keep that original page open when you were doing the work listed there. |
I loved it it was simple to use and very helpful If I had trouble learning the material. |
It was very easy to use and the layout was very easy on the eyes, you didn't have to jump back and forth between things and it was all on one page easily accessible. |
I think the website home page was set up neatly but signing up was kind of difficult and confusing. I think helping the students sign up would help out in the long run. I also had a hard time keeping the tab open. Whenever I was on Achieve I would have to reload the page several times and it became a hassle for me. Besides that though I enjoyed using the website. |
Achieve is okay. not the best way to truly learn about somthing. |
It worked well for me, it took a week or two to fully get the hang of it and figure out where things were. After that, it was a piece of cake. |
Achieve was great, everything was simple and to the point, my only complaint is the first week quiz that was taken without my knowledge? Compared to InQuizative which I used in another class, Achieve was lightyears better and more enjoyable. |
I have never used the achieve website before and I absolutely loved it. It was very easy to navigate and the way the chapters are broken down into smaller sections makes learning simple and more attainable . |
Achieve worked fine. I wish that the chapters were less fragmented. Longer, more comprehensive chapters would have been better and required less navigation forward and backward. |
The main problem with Achieve in my opinion were poorly created questions in the weekly quizzes. It seemed that there was at least one question each week that a student could only get correct by random chance. |
I liked the repetitive nature of Achieve. It helped with memorizing the information |
Overall I think it was easy to use and I liked it. My two biggest gripes though, was the inability to organize my notes in a way that made sense to me and how some quiz questions came from other chapters and not the current chapter I was being quizzed on. |
It was very easy to navigate and find what I was looking for. Personally I see no problems with the website or layout. |
My
only wish is achieve allowed me to
open the window I want in a separate
window without having to change the
navigation several times. |
It was easy to look through just extremely glitchy. Especially the notebook and highlight features. Using them proved a bit difficult and I would often have to close out of the website and reopen it to get it to work. Or sometimes just refreshing it would work. However, I really enjoyed the highlight and notebook features in Achieve. They saved me a lotttt of time studying as I ended up taking many of my notes through the notebook feature and they were easy to find when reviewing for the midterm. |
Achieve was easy to navigate, I enjoyed it a lot. The only problem I had was the moodle grades and achieve grades not entirely being the same. I am a worrier and always want to know my score as soon as possible. |

There is nothing that I can think of which would be a helpful tool for this history class. |
not that i can think of |

There is an app called GroupMe that is basically a group chat app, the way I think it could be used in this class could be as a resource for students to reach out to each other and ask for help or just talk about information in the class. |
Im not sure what other apps or websites you could use I think the material covered in the class was very well thought out and it kept me on track throughout the term. |
Nothing that I can think of. |
I noticed there was a Mindtap app that could be downloaded last term, but no app for Achieve this term. I think apps make it easier if one is away from home and has to use a tablet or some other mobile device to study. |
No, I can't think of any other app or tool. |
Not an app but the crash course series on European history on YouTube covered a lot of the material our textbook did. I watched these to help me better understand the time period right before wwi and it helped clarify a lot of the concepts for me. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtMsMTfmRomkVQG8AqrAmJFX |

LCC has been encouraging instructors to
adopt Open Educational Resources (OER) as a
way to help students by reducing or
eventually eliminating the need for costly
textbooks. Basically, "free" materials found
on the web would be used as a replacement.
While this sounds like a great idea on the
surface, it would involve many changes in
the way instructors and students interact
with class materials. Keep these in
mind as you think about this topic.
Would web links, to online-only
materials, be a sufficient replacement for
your textbook?
I can think of at least two very substantial
changes that would have to happen
immediately.
#1 Materials would come from any number of
websites and sources. This would necessitate
incredible organization on the part of the
instructor and student: keeping reading
links in order, which specific pages of that
multipage website are required reading, and
hoping that the links don't become "dead"
links. Also, just because an instructor
could add a new link at any time, some
students may not "get the message" about the
new required materials in a timely fashion.
In short, think of a textbook with
potentially "disappearing" pages and
magically reappearing "new" pages. NOTE:
Think about the links that took you
"outside" of Moodle each week in this
class. I would do the same, but
probably many more, with link to different
reading materials/article/websites.
These would take the place of a normal,
single textbook.
#2 You would have to do ALL of your reading
online. (Yes, I am aware that all of
you did this with the free Achieve textbook
this term.) Of course, some students
may choose to print out the materials, but
think of printing out your current
textbooks, either a few chapters at a time
or everything that is needed for the
term. Do you have a printer?
Does the replacement of a textbook that
results in the printing of volumes of paper
cause more problems than it solves? Do
you like to read online, whether it be on
computer screen, or Kindle/iPad/tablet, or
even a smart phone? Do you have access to
(money for) these devices? Does this affect
how you would take notes
(written/typed/highlighted) on the
materials?
These are some of my thoughts, but the
question to you is simple. What can you tell
me about your own readiness or willingness
to buy or not to buy textbooks and save
money (or not), surf many different websites
(or not), read online (or not), print
webpages (or not) for a history class such
as this one? Have you ever taken a
class that used only free, online materials?
How did that work? How might it
work for this specific HISTORY class?
| Respondent | Response |

I am against paying such a crazy amount for textbooks, I often try to find cheaper alternatives online which take forever to ship but I would rather not have a text book for the first week of class then pay $100+ for a book that is gonna be outdated in like a year anyway. Free online materials is always nice, or even just buying reasonably priced online textbooks or other tools. Physical text books from the store that the school provides are absurdly priced. |
I took a class that had free materials as information for the course and I did not enjoy it very much at all. The websites were littered with ads and every link opened started with an "allow all cookies" message that would grant you access to the materials. |
I really like the idea of a free text book. Everything has gone Digital nowadays and will continue to evolve in that direction. I think making students pay for textbooks is a scam for the school to make more money and the method is outdated. |
I did both i print the notes i type as i was reading the textbook |
Ya know Ill complain in a section like this about how I feel classes should be ran, however in all actuality I'm going to do what is required of me to pass. So if i need to buy a book thats what ill do, If i have to pay for an online program ill do it. Ultimately I'm going to do what is required. |
If I can save money, I take it. Classes are already pretty expensive and a lot of textbooks being $100+ is rough. If I had all the required reading in a list where I could access it and read online, that would be ideal. I am taking a class currently that uses a free online book and I enjoyed it a lot, it had videos throughout the reading that correlated well with the topics and only added on to what we were reading and helped clarify topics. |
I have a full-time job so buying books isn't a problem and I enjoy having them after the classes are done to reference points I might have in another class. I did enjoy the ebook in this term though, I was able to highlight in different colors info I thought was important, Important people, Acts or bills, and Foundations or organizations so I still found it useful even if I'd prefer an actual book. |
College is already so expensive that many people can't afford to attend or they go into severe debt. I think eliminating any cost possible is great. |
I am not a fan of OER. I have found that instructor-selected textbooks are usually better than OER. OER also raises the question: "Why am I paying for this when I could have just taught myself by watching youtube videos and reading online articles I could have found myself?" |
I took college classes 25 years ago, before the internet was as advanced as it is now, when you had to buy an expensive textbook for each class. It was indeed more expensive, but some textbooks are actually good things to keep on your bookshelf even after college is over. Especially a well-written, well-illustrated history textbook. I see the good aspects of free learning materials, but I think the ones you have to pay for are probably better quality. I'm willing to pay more money if the quality is better. I do most of my reading on digital devices these days. I think one way or the other, if a student pays for a textbook, whether it's in digital form or a physical book, they should have the ability to keep it and own it for future reading and enjoyment. |
I enjoy both, so I'm no going to be of help. I appreciate the free books, not using paper, and having the information always available on my phone/ tablet. But I'm "old-fashioned" and I love books |
I do think I slightly prefer reading from an actually textbook as I find it makes notetaking easier, however, given that online resources are free or low-cost, I would ultimately choose to stick with online options. |
I would love to have free materials. Even if at first it seems like a hassle to navigate through all of them. Eventually you will get used to the situation and it will be more than worth it. |
Online
only would work better for me and it
would eliminate having to look for a
used copy to rent and I wouldn't have
to worry about return dates. |
I would be willing to explore other articles for learning, and I think if organized and presented correctly it could be just as efficient. I think using OER is really helpful because it makes your class more accessible to people who might be really affected by having to spend $50. I know people in many different situations who that might apply to. I have taken many classes that have adapted this method and I found them just as good as classes with expensive textbooks. I actually found them better than a couple classes with expensive textbooks. However, for this class, I do see the importance of using a textbook as it is important to get a cohesive timeline of events when studying history. If this can still be accomplished while using OER, I think this would be the best option. |
Personally any money I can save helps as college is very expensive. I do not mind viewing materials from different websites and am an organized person. It is very easy to find materials/books online for free and I have done it before in other classes. |

All I would recommend is a Zoom lecture with https://kahoot.it/, a way to quiz during a lecture from smartphones or computers. |

I have no points to make and I enjoyed this class overall, Thank you Mr. Escobar. |

None. I really enjoyed this class. I appreciate that you don't assign a bunch of busy work. Makes learning more fun. |

As previously stated, I hate online-only classes. So, my input would be: "make it an in-person class, or add a zoom lecture component." |

I was in the hospital unexpectedly for 3 days last term, and again this term, and picked up Covid while I was there this term. I managed to get the weekly quizzes done from the hospital that particular week. So it didn't really affect me adversely. But I guess my only other suggestion would be that maybe there should be a way to make up points for a missed quiz if it happened due to something unavoidable like a health issue. |

I think having this online class this semester was helpful to me because my work had a couple covid scares, and it would often take a day or two to get a test. If it was in person, there would be a higher likelihood of me missing classes due to my job which would likely get me behind. |
