Students were required to use the Cengage MindTap platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace. Being an online class, most required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook. MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (45%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap. Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific. I'd appreciate your honesty.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)

MindTap as a whole works great! I found myself to take information in best through its way of organizing chapters and sections. One negative is some issues with their mobile app, which only allows reading of the ebook and their flash cards, nothing else. Quality was good, I do regret buying the paper version of the book as the online version did just fine for me. If I really wanted to get sections on paper, they provide a printing option. When I did use the app on my iPad, I found the highlighting feature helpful to engage with reading. The $80 value is worth it to me, and makes me want to search out for more classes at LCC that does MindTap or something very similar to that. Text-to-speech was something I did not use, the voice felt to jarring to listen to. Flashcards were a nice touch, unfortunately I did not use them. |

I actually really liked this textbook. I felt as though it was a lot less dry than other history textbooks that I have used. I definitely prefer this one over the one that the other professor uses (I also took History 203 this term with another professor). I think it's a good idea to continue to use this textbook. |
I did not think I would like the online textbook format and also purchased the physical book. I almost never used the physical book and found the online textbook and MindTap format extremely usable! |
I enjoyed using the Mindtap site. It was easy to follow and use once I understood how to use the three chances option. I didn't understand how it worked in the beginning, but after 'getting it' it made it much easier. I liked the "read it out loud" to me portion a lot! Super helpful. I didn't mind the value for $80, but I just realized my financial aid didn't cover it and now I have to pay for it, but I won't be able to get any resale value out of it that I know of. Bummer. This class taught me a lot about the way things are decided today for our country and why decisions are made the way they are based on the rules, laws, and systems set up back then. |
I liked the MindTap book. I was sponsored and did not have to pay for this year though. The price tag on the book was kind of high in my opinion but was good quality. I did not use the read it out loud to me option much probably under 10 times. I do not remember using other features such as flashcards. I did like how you could have the book and quiz questions side by side because I like that layout and found it helpful. Overall I thought the book was good. |
I enjoyed using Cengage for the MindTap exercises. I have used it before for another class and enjoyed it more with the multipul tries on the activitys. It let me learn what I needed to know as well as where to find the answers I got wrong. |
I would much rather use MindTap over a physical textbook. Having the 'textbook' (MindTap) available to me regardless of where I accessed the class was convenient. Also, not having to worrying about returning or keeping track of a textbook was wonderful. |
I disliked the MindTap program immensely. For the amount of reading required for the class, a textbook would be much more useful in helping me learn the material and read when I could, when I was away from the computer. I felt the material in the chapters was scattered and disorganized, very hard for me to follow. It felt like a bunch of information crammed together and out of sequence. Only having a few questions on the chapter quizzes gave little room for a getting a good grade. I also struggled with the chapter quizzes greatly, I don't do well with the critical thinking aspect of how I interpret letters, etc. rather than quizzing on the material itself. I am sure it's a good program, but it did not suit my learning skills at all and I struggled greatly with it. Also, MindTap is not compatible with my iPhone, I could not read it sometimes and could not do the chapter quizzes if I was wanting to work on it during my lunches at work. I did greatly appreciate the organized structure of the class though, the instructor was extremely thorough, fair and communicative. He provided a balance of material for both reading and visual (videos). Although I struggled with MindTap, I felt the expectations and heavy workload were more realistic for a college course than some of the other classes and, though it made you earn your credits, the instructor was very fair about grading and he was very prompt about the timing of grading as well. VERY much appreciate his efforts as an instructor and I can see the work he puts into his classes. |
I liked mind tap. It wasn't too expensive either. I liked the walk through activities. They help reinforce the book learning. |
Mind tap was expensive, yes. But the chapter breakdown was good and activities for each section was helpful. I struggle without a physical copy of the book to study, but I am aware it was a purchasing option if I required it. |
Overall I think that MindTap was a good thing to include for this course. I found the mini quizzes at the end of each section kept me on my toes. However, the chapter tests I never did well on, even when I was reading every. single. word. of the text. I could never figure out quite what it was with the tests but I felt very discouraged with how unsuccessful I was with them. Generally I don't test well, but never that poorly. I don't know if that is something that can necessarily be fixed but they felt difficult and often didn't feel that relevant to the chapters. |
The textbook was readable and the multiple text size options were nice to have. sometimes the sections were long for the 3 questions we got and the end, The chapter quiz's seemed a bit long. almost like they were making up for the short sections questions. I think mindtap is a reasonable system to use and a good textbook with a cheap (for textbooks) price. |
I did not like this text book at all it was very confusing for me to use |
I was excite that the book was online. It was one less book I had to carry around. It enabled me to work on it anywhere |
I thought the MindTap experience was great. Having an interactive textbook is really a different, positive learning experience. I'll admit there have been times in the past where I've bought textbooks for class and the size/chapter reading requirements were so overwhelming that I would often not even open my textbook. Having MindTap really helped things go by 'quicker' since it's less mundane reading and more interactive. |
MindTap had a very good structure to it and I did not encounter any problems that did not allow me to study or access the material. |
The main feedback I would offer is that the chapter tests did not reflect what the chapter itself was about some of the time. I found it difficult to translate some of the historical scripts. Overall the class was extremely organized and beneficial. The read it out loud option was helpful. I did not feel the need to use flashcards. The online book itself was clear and easy to understand. |
I really like the online text book. I had no problems with the quality or readability. I usually prefer a book over an online text book but this one worked great for me. I was worried about it at first. I did struggle taking the weekly test. I did not use the highlight text or notes, I made my own notes and think that affected my test scores. I didn't have a lot of time to navigate the online textbook which I feel added to my poor test scores as well. Overall, It was a good value |
I was very satisfied with the information that was included with the information included in the readable textbook. I did not utilize much of the features that were offered to the reader but did enjoy that I had access to the textbook online. I also enjoyed being able to track my progress on MindTap. I had an overall positive experience with the textbook. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less. For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles. Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.

For me, I work close to full time 8-3 on weekdays. I did have different obligations for those evenings I would be off work. That being said, I would have benefited greatly from having multiple deadlines throughout the week to make more time for this and my other online class. Those obligations are important to a degree but can be adjusted to fit my schoolwork, which is something I did not work hard enough to change. |

My only free time was on sundays for this class. On the other days I have work and night classes. |
This is a very hard decision to make. I do think that this would increase understanding and participation. As someone who is going to school full-time and has a job, I would find it very difficult to complete the assignments on time. It's too hard to say for sure what the best method would be. |

Having kids at home that need my attention for their own homework and sports activities after school etc...plus family life and a husband with a weekday off and me working part-time mornings...the Sunday night deadline for everything was excellent for me. |
I like being able to get my history done on the weekend because my other course's work was due early in the week. I also have more free time on the weekends to get things done. |
some weeks I really relied on the weekend to get my work done. I work as a live in support worker for two medically complex children so my days are quite full. I would get some work done throughout the week, but really needed the weekend. Spending all day going from Doctor appointment to Doctor appointment, they were exhausting days that did not end until 10. So getting the relief of sleeping was important for my physical and mental health. That’s why I oppose the throughout the week due dates. |
I support the idea in the sense that it would enforce better study habits. However, I strongly oppose it in every other sense. We are all adults, and how we choose to study should be our choice. But more importantly, most students take online courses because of their busy schedules and multiple deadlines throughout the week would not only take away from that appeal of online courses but also cause more stress on the students taking your course. |
Many students, ESPECIALLY online, have many other obligations throughout the week and need to sit for 16 hour stretches on the weekends to do the work. This is why, and sometimes the only way, they are able to go to school and take classes online, so the can make it fit their schedules. If they don't succeed with the way they plan their time, they are accountable to themselves. I think adding the deadlines throughout the week would add much more stress to the heavy workload of the class and cause more failure than increased success. The single deadline helps with flexing the time as needed to get the work done. But this is just based on my own personal experience and knowing others that have families and jobs yet are in school and still making As with crunching in the work together sometimes. Don't punish those that can do it, let those that think they can and fail be accountable to themselves... |
I think a Wednesday and Sunday is a good balance. Wednesday gives enough time into the weeks for people with jobs and families. I think multiple deadlines would be good though because it would give more opportunity to not rush. |
I agree that accessing the material more would be most effective, but implementing more deadlines would be difficult for those of us who are taking online courses because we continue to work full time and have families. While I would love to access the course daily and digest slowly, it simply isn't an option some weeks. I feel like in a college level course, as adults, we should be trusted to take the information and use it to the best of our ability, since we do pay for this course. |
I think that if the first two checks were due Tuesday and then two more Thursday, and the rest on Sunday it would encourage students to spend more time throughout the week and it seems doable. I have work and other class that I take and I think it would have been manageable for me. |
I understand the positives of participating more and procrastinating less, but for me personally that just isnt regularly possible. I'm working two jobs, taking two part time classes, and trying to apply to other jobs with the leftover time. fixed deadlines in the middle of the week would almost certainly see me not completing some assignments because the inflexible parts of my life got in the way. That would be only a couple of times in the term though. |
I am neutral with this statement |
having multiple deadlines would have been a great hinderence to me due to my family and work obligations. I liked that everything was due on sunday because then i could pace myself and if i needed to step away i could without the stress of trying to make an early week deadline. |
I'm not sure |
For example. if this was the case for this term, I wouldn't have enough time. |
I attempted to log in most days of the week and set individual deadlines for myself that worked well with school, work, and family. I think that individuals should hold themselves accountable to making sure they finish their work on time. Part of being a productive adult is time management. I like the idea of Sunday being the deadline for our weekly work assignments. |
I never waited till the weekend to complete exercises but having midweek deadlines would stress me out. Perhaps a Thursday and Friday deadline would be generous for the check your understanding and keep the chapter test for Sunday. |
I strongly agree with the deadlines on Sunday. As a student supporting myself I am working 35 hours a week. Due to this busy schedule of being a student and worker it can be very difficult to meet deadlines that are on weekdays. Due to this i would recommend keeping deadlines on Sunday. |

In Moodle, I used a "folder view" style of class which treated each week as its own collapsible and expandable folder. Within each week, a organized your tasks in to reading/viewing and assignments to "turn in" categories. That text was auto-linked to the activity modules that appeared at the bottom of each week. In this course, you were provided with links that took you "OUT" of Moodle to class materials located in Google Docs. A number of these external links also took you to videos, and in some cases these videos were part of the LCC Library collection and required a separate login. Finally, I provided students with a course deadline calendar that was both subscribable and available as a pop-up webpage (with specific dates and times), to go along with the more generic weekly "calendars" that only included "due Wednesday" or "due Sunday".
In short, I'd like to know how well, or not, this auto-linking, course organization, Google Doc use, and calendaring worked for you. Have you taken another course where the instructor has done something different that you preferred? Do you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for what could have been done better, made clearer, or benefited you more during the term?

The organization of the class through Moodle is great, and way better than the other online class I was taking. The Google doc pop-outs were nice, but I do prefer it to be kept on the Moodle page. I'd imagine you have your own reason to keep it on a doc so it is not too big a problem to me. The calendar was something I utilized at first but stopped just after a week or two. |

For some reason, quite a few of the videos would not load on my chromebook and I'd have to seek out a computer to use. This proved quite difficult and often times I was not able to take advantage of taking the video quizzes twice. The google docs worked fine. I couldn't figure out how to subscribe to the google calendar. That was probably just operator-error. I do think it would have been nice to have been able to use it though. |

This is my first year at LCC online and I have not had any other courses do this. I do STRONGLLY like the layout of the Cengage and Moodle for this course. |
I enjoyed having so many resources and using so many different forms of teaching. I’m an auditory learner so the videos helped me as well as the read aloud function of the book. I just happen to be a horrible test taker. |
I loved having access to a calendar that I could subscribe to. That was very helpful. I also liked the folder view style of the class with each week being collapsible. I felt more organized and more aware of the deadlines and assignments with this style. I have not seen other teachers use this organizational tool within Moodle before, but would like to see it more often. |
You provided the most interaction with Google docs/calendar than I have seen other instructors use. You definitely seem to make a great deal of effort to ensure great success with using online programs and I think it is really great and much needed. Some instructors don't even know how to use Moodle or grade, even one that had us scan in our math homework rather than doing it online. It's refreshing to see an instructor embrace the technology that we're relying on to use for the classes. Kudos to you. |
I like to Moodle format and find all of it helpful and organized |
I appreciate this very much! I wish all online courses had collapsible weeks. The calendar was a little redundant for me because I use moodle so often. |
I really liked the drop down week by week. It kept it much easier to find the week we were on and didn't mess with my brain with all the assignments. I also liked the way you had the individual weeks set up, very well organized. |
I liked it. |
I dont like having to use a different site to do my work if everything could be done on moodle then it would make more sense to me and if the book was one big book that would be easier |
I liked the format of how moodle was set up |
I had no issues with the course organization or auto-linking. I appreciated that we could minimize the folders after weeks had passed so it was easy to focus on specific weeks expectations. |
First course that bad that but it was very effective. |
I was able to access each link that was provided. The calendaring was helpful for deadline reminders. The Mindtap website was easy to use also. |
The auto-linking worked great, I appreciated being able to just click on resources such as the videos. I didn't use the google calendar, I just checked moodle frequently. I did miss one video test that I was super bummed about, perhaps If I used the google calendar I wouldn't have missed that. I wish I could have made that video test up. I was going to contact you about it but read in the syllabus that you do not accept make up work for missed assignments. |

I thought the folder style for this class was very successful. I had not seen this style before but was surprised how well it worked. It kept me on track and helped me see what I had planned for the week. The course linking was easy to follow. I did not run into any problems. The google doc use was easy, well organized, and helpful. I would highly recommend this set up to other online courses. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

I honestly think that this course was very well organized. There is a vast difference between this course and the History 203 course that I took. I did much better in this course than the other one. I can't think of anything that needs to be changed. |

I think the class has great structure and is very organized and you stay communicative. As for a suggestion, a lot of the classes utilize forums for students to interact on projects/writing. I, myself, hate forums, but I can see how this would connect students more and reading other student's views really is eye opening, especially for online students who don't have any interaction. It's always fascinating and fosters growth to see other students thinking about the same material you are studying. I think other than that, (and that I hate MindTap), I really appreciate this class and the efforts made by the instructor to make it a true college course where efforts through time and work make the grade. |

I'm not sure what else you could do. Compared to many of the other online courses i have taken this seems to be a well rounded course to me.

I wish the video quiz was released on a Monday/Tuesday instead of midweek on a Thursday. There have been multiple instances this term where I have taken Friday-Sunday trips rather it be for family matters or vacation (I turned 21 in Vegas during this term) where I felt bummed I wouldn't be able to do a second attempt because I didn't have the time. I try to reserve the weekends for as much family time as possible and doing the second attempt forced me to cut plans short or I simply didn't have the ability to access Moodle to do it. I know it might be making it 'too easy' if you give us 2 attempts, let us see what answers we got wrong, AND release it earlier, but it was probably my only borderline frustration with this class. Maybe even a Wednesday release of the video quiz would make it easier since we'd have Thursday-Sunday for our second attempt. I do appreciate that you gave us opportunities to get 100% on the video quiz + you allowed the 3-attempts on our MindTap questions and I apologize if my suggestion seems nit-picky. |

I don't have recommendations that quickly come to mind. I greatly appreciated how organized this class was. |

A question I would of liked to expand on is the tests. I had a very hard time on the weekly quizzes even after fully reading the content. Due to this I have struggled keeping a high grade in this class. I would recommend changing that there are not weekly quizzes that strongly effect grades. I would recommend a forum for a student to explain what they have learned instead. |
