Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included all important class dates, such as quiz deadlines, forum start and stop deadlines, initial post and final reply deadlines, and exams?
NOTE: I am talking about officially subscribing to the Google calendar, which provides you with automatic updates and reminders. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Students were required to use the Cengage MindTap platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace. Being an online class, most required materials were included in MindTap, including the textbook. MindTap had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the MindTap activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
I plan to require my future online students to purchase and use MindTap. Please use this space to provide me with any relevant feedback on your MindTap experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific. I'd appreciate your honesty.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $80 price you paid, whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature (flashcards?).
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I found the MindTap experience to be helpful in learning the material of this course. The readability of the textbook made a positive impact on the flow of information. |
No I do not. |
Over all, I liked the textbook. I especially think the read aloud feature was nice, and something that I used quite often. |
| some of the
test questions on mind tap were worded
in a way that was confusing to me. some
answers I would get wrong because I
didn't understand how to answer the
question within the test parameters,
even though I may have a sufficient
understanding of the subject. I did like
that I could have multiple attempts and
corrections on the other activities in
mind tap, and especially when it tells
you what you did wrong and what the
right answer is. |
.. |
I would say I was satisfied. I think their was already enough in it. I
enjoyed this textbook more because
of all the exercises added in it. |
I was happy with the fully online textbook, and liked its discussion of all aspects of history. I didn't use any special MindTap features. |
Other than one technical problem where my work was not saved, I didn't have any problems with mindtap. It's a very user-friendly platform. |
I have used MindTap for a few other classes through Lane and have always had a good experience with the site. |
It's a pretty good textbook, sometimes it goes off on un-needed information, but not too often. I would continue with using the textbook in the future, for it is a very organized and effective way to learn the material for the class. |
I was very satisfied with the use of the textbook. Overall, it is set up very well. I learned a lot from it, and it is very well organized. I loved that it was fully online, I was able to make highlights and notes a lot. Which helped me retain important information and when reviewing see the important things in the chapters. |
It was good and I can’t complain. If it was more connected to moodle that would be great but I don’t believe that is in your power. |
I did like how relevant and easy MindTap was to use. But I would prefer if I had the option to find the same book somewhere else online for a cheaper price. Overall my textbook experience on my top was definitely worthwhile. |
I really liked using MindTap, it was easy to access anywhere and the information was clear and useful. The checks and tests were a great way to reinforce what we learned. I didn't use the flashcards as much but I wish I did. I really liked the organization of it all, I need everything laid out for me in an organized fashion like this for me to actually succeed so I enjoyed it a lot. |

Each week I provided numerous video clips of varying lengths for students to watch. I personally edited each clip from a longer, full-length documentary that I watched in preparation for this class. I did this with the expressed purpose of helping students understand and focus on the most important historical events being presented in each chapter of the textbook. Overall, what role did these clips play in your understanding of the course materials?

Do you have any other feedback for me concerning the use and requirement of these video clips?
- Did you need me to provide more textual or descriptive background for each clip?
- Was it helpful that you were able to pause and/or rewatch these online clips?
- Were you able to take notes, see how the clip related to the textbook, and easily determine the main purpose or message presented in each clip?
- After watching each clip, did you come away clearly understanding the reason why it was assigned?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
| The ability to rewatch the online clips made it easy to absorb the information through the website. | |
I thought everything was very well organized, and we appreciate you editing them to hold only the information we need. |
I think it would be helpful to know what part of the chapter a video relates to. For example, This video corresponds to section 4-1c of the textbook. |
| taking notes
on them was helpful when I did it. |
.. |
No. Yes. Yes. Yes, but I feel like the quizzes went to into detail. |
The video clips are good as-is, though I didn't like that the video quizzes contained questions about very specific parts of the videos, for example asking for the exact words of a historian from the clip. |
I was able to take notes, I understood the importance of the video clips relative to what we were reading in mindtap. Lastly, the questions on the tests were effective because the reminder of what the question is covering helped to refresh memories about what we watched. |
The video clips helped me visualize and better understand the events we were learning about. |
They worked pretty well, but some of the video quiz questions seemed to pinpoint on something that was way too specific, and if you missed two seconds out of a 10 min video, you might get a question wrong, but overall I felt they were fine. |
I think these clips were great! They helped me fully understand the stuff that was being said in the textbook. I benefit from the visual learning of the videos, so it helped me fully grasp the concepts further. They are quite useful. |
Nope it was good and it felt necessary to the content |
Yes, the videos were very clear and thorough delivering the message we were intended to receive. |
More background on the clips would've been useful, but I did like that I could pause and rewatch the videos at any point. It was a little hard for me to take notes because there wasn't really any clear direction on what to take notes on. It was easy to understand the importance of each clip though and I was able to catch on to the gist of it. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/MindTap on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred policy would be to include several due dates (for the Check Your Understanding activities) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or may be just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for the Chapter Tests.

For some students, more deadlines would force them to participate more during the week and procrastinate less. For others, due to family, work, or other obligations, midweek deadlines might impose true obstacles. Please use this space to explain your support or opposition to the proposal to add midweek deadlines to this course.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
I would oppose the proposal personally due to work. Working during the week and weekends pose difficulty to obtain any crucial time for learning the material. |
Personally, this would be tough because of many obstacles I deal with. The Sunday due date for everything helps me take things into ownership, and if I procrastinate and my grade shows it, then that it my fault. |
I agree that this would help with procrastination. However, I think that its nicer not to confine students to when they do their work. Last term I almost always spread my mindtap work out over the week, but this term I had a lot of other work to do before Wednesday, so I often did my mindtap work later in the week. I think that part of taking an online class is having the freedom to work on your school when it fits your schedule. |
I
agree with the idea, but personally I
prefer to get homework done at the end
of the week because I'm rarely home
during the week. |
.. |
I like splitting up my classes, like I’ll work on one class for three or two days of week then go to another. |
I don't like this idea for schedule reasons. More deadlines means more chances to conflict with other classes and commitments. |
I would argue that a Thursday or Friday deadline would help with your compelling interest in forcing periodical learning, but would also not be a hindrance to those who are really busy in the middle of the week. |
I liked having all the deadlines on Sunday. Although I did not login everyday, it was convenient for someone working full-time. I could complete the chapters at my pace throughout the week, as well as bounce back and forth between the work I need to do for both of my classes. My other online class had Monday/Wednesday deadlines, and I felt as though I should have the whole week to learn the material from that week. |
I have a very busy schedule, so having an entire week to do the assigned work is much more helpful, because I can be more flexible. |
I think that it would be very hard for a lot of people if there were deadlines in the middle of the week. For my case, I am taking 12 credits altogether, and not having to worry about more mid-week deadlines is very nice. I am usually able to spread out my work more, and not cram it all into a few days. But if it was put in the middle of the week I think I would have a hard time, due to all of the other deadlines in my 3 other classes. So overall, I don't think it's a very good idea. I know that a lot of students are all balancing full-time jobs, or have families, and that would make it all very hard. The way you have it set up right now works very well for me though! I think it should be up to the student as to how they want to learn, and if they want to learn in an effective way (like spreading out their work across the week) or in an ineffective way (by cramming it all on the weekend). |
I understand the need to space out content over the week and really understand it all but we all learn differently. And that’s the beauty of doing online is exactly that, we can do anything at any time for however long we need to. Most of us have jobs and other added stress. School is stress full by itself and we shouldn’t need to worry about something everyday. I strongly suggest that yo don’t do this! |
I understand that some people tend to just put everything aside and complete the required work all in one day which isn't the smartest idea. However some people have jobs and obligations that they must fulfill so in my opinion I believe that having certain deadlines to complete assignments would be a good idea. |
I think it's a good idea for some extent, I think the Wednesday Sunday deadline would work best, I think more than that would become confusing or interfere with people's lives. |

In
the past, when I did not offer extra
credit, students frequently asked about
extra credit opportunities. I
listened to student feedback and made two extra
credit opportunities available to students
this term both before after the midterm
exam. Unfortunately, very few
students decided to complete this
work. What OTHER kind of extra credit
assignment would you have preferred?
What have you done in OTHER classes at
LCC? Please share your thoughts with

it was made available in this

I do not have any thoughts on this. |
To be honest the extra credit assignments were a lot of work. I think. Most students just weren’t willing to put in the amount of time required for the assignments. |
The
extra credit looked like a great idea
and I should have done at least one of
them, but they are massive projects,
maybe have some smaller ones available
next time? I didn't want to commit to
taking on extra credit when my
schedule was already so busy, but I
could certainly have used the credit. |

.. |
You’re extra credit was about the same I’ve seen in others. |
I would have preferred extra credit opportunities that were not written essays. Personally, I struggle with writing papers, and the time and effort were not worth it given my good performance in the class. |
I liked the extra credit opportunity about 12 years a slave. The movie was great, and it was insightful. I would recommend keeping that opportunity and making another one that is from a different movie. Also to provide the articles that you want us to read. |
If I felt as though I needed extra credit, then I would have done the assignments, but I was comfortable with my grade in the class and did not feel obligated to complete the extra credit. |
Students seem to stray away from papers, especially when it's only for a couple extra credit points. Perhaps it just doesn't feel worth the time. Perhaps something smaller, like a PowerPoint presentation that represents the students knowledge of the subject could suffice. |
I love the idea of extra credit, and I usually do it quite frequently. The one thing that stopped me from doing the first opportunity, was due to the movie being Rated R. I just preferred not to see some of that content. So I chose not to. Many times for the extra credit opportunities, I find myself already having a lot of schoolwork to do, and not enough time to get all of the work in. taking 12-14 credits each term gets quite busy. I love having the opportunity available, in case there is a week for me with a lighter workload in all my classes.... but I am not always able to take advantage of the opportunity due to other classwork. It is a great opportunity to have the extra credit though, and I would recommend you keep it! |
I did complete one extra credit assignment and it was worth it for me. Other things could be something simpler such as watching a movie and writing out our thoughts. I believe it would be helpful to have an easier assignment to do to earn easy points. Because you don’t want us to fail your class. It doesn’t have to be worth as much but it’s just a little something to show students that yo care if the succeed. Unfortunately it’s not always obvious to some students that their teachers care. |
I believe you provided students with multiple opportunities to earn extra credit and if they did not complete them then that was their fault. I would not have changed any extra credit assignments you assigned. The way you assigned it was the way I prefer. |
I think a cool extra credit opportunity would be to look up a history subject of their interest (falling within what we're learning) and to do some kind of report on that. It could include an art assignment or a paper so people can tailor it to their interests while still learning, |

In Moodle, I used a "folder view" style of class which treated each week as its own collapsible and expandable folder. Within each week, a organized your tasks in to reading/viewing and assignments to "turn in" categories. That text was auto-linked to the activity modules that appeared at the bottom of each week. In this course, you were provided with links that took you "OUT" of Moodle to class materials located in Google Docs. A number of these external links also took you to videos, and in some cases these videos were part of the LCC Library collection and required a separate login. Finally, I provided students with a course deadline calendar that was both subscribable and available as a pop-up webpage (with specific dates and times), to go along with the more generic weekly "calendars" that only included "due Wednesday" or "due Sunday".
In short, I'd like to know how well, or not, this auto-linking, course organization, Google Doc use, and calendaring worked for you. Have you taken another course where the instructor has done something different that you preferred? Was this course organized better/clearer than others you may have taken? Do you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for what could have been done better, made clearer, or benefited you more during the term?

All my classes use this folder configuration to organize assignments, and I find it very helpful. This course was the most clear out of all my courses, and I quickly could find when things were due and use materials to help my overall grade. I really enjoyed mindtap as well. |

I really like the format of this class on moodle |
it
was well organized, grades were kept
up to date which makes things much
less stressful than some other
classes. |

This course was well organized and was set up similar to my other classes. I wouldn’t change anything about how its setup. |
It worked well, though I would rather you keep the first half of the class, rather than removing it after the midterm. |
The organization was very user-friendly, I am happy to have had this organization. The class would otherwise be hard to follow. |
I liked the moodle organization of this course. I have had other professor that made it way to chaotic, but this was very easy to follow and understand. The links worked great for me. |
The links worked very well. I didn't use the calendar at all though. I thought it was very organized. |
This course was organized fantastically. it was set up a lot better than a lot of the courses I have taken online since the shutdown of the LCC campus. It was clear, concise, and well organized. My one suggestion would be that once the second half of the term begins, you still leave the first half of the term "folders" viewable. Maybe you could put them below the second half view or something? Sometimes I benefit from reviewing old info, during the second half of the term. it helps me remember and keep the information. |
Yes it worked |
Your organization overall with the course what is amazing and very clear to understand what you assigned and what we had to turn in that week. I thankfully have had the opportunity to have instructors with the same use of "Folder View". |
I think the auto-linking worked well, I don't have too strong opinions on it. I do feel like it made things a little more organized and less cluttered which helped. I liked the calendar because I got notifications on deadlines and work that was due which was a good reminder. |

Is there any other type of smartphone app or web-based tool or service that you know of or have used in another class (such as a shared Google Doc) that:

I would recommend providing some help on how to interpret some of the chapter test excerpts. Sometimes they were hard to understand completely given the unfamiliar speech norms. |

I am unaware of any apps to help this class. |

No, I can't think of anything that is readily accessible to everyone and would work well. The system you have seems to work great! |

I do not. |

I don't, most apps that I've seen other classes use aren't usually the best so I always just go to the websites. I personally use Chegg to make flashcards on my phone which I really like because they're all in one place and I take my phone everywhere with me. Quizlet can also be a good one because people can collaborate on that one and make group flashcards. |

What question or questions did I forget to ask you in this survey?
and/or
What recommendations (other than the "mechanical" Moodle/MindTap/Google Docs things I asked above) would you suggest in order to improve this online course?

This online course was a decent first experience with online classes through Lane Community College, but do prefer personally an on campus course for my personal ability to engage in learning. |

I honestly have nothing. I was very satisfied with this course, and I feel like I learned more here than in my other courses so thank you for having me in your class. |

I think the video quizzes shouldn’t be as long and strict. It’s just a lot of information to remember even with having open notes. |
I have nothing else to say. |
Great class! Thank you. |
I had a great time learning about history, and the course was easy to navigate which helped me focus on the class more than trying to figure out how to navigate it. Thank you for a great term! |
The video clips were kind of nice, but not necessarily needed for the course. I had the class prior to this one where we didn't have the videos. It solidified the information we already read from the textbook. I guess it's nice to have another form of information though. |
I think that having the ability to see the shared google doc for mid-term and final studying a lot sooner than a week before the final or mid-term would be a lot better. I found that with it only a week before I had to cram it in my schedule and I wasn't able to prepare as much as I would've liked to. Since I am taking 12-14 credits each term it made it very hard. The sheet is so helpful and I love using it! But I didn't feel like I had enough time to prepare as well as I would've liked to. It might be better to make it a sheet that gets filled out over the course of the 5 weeks as students read the material? Or even getting it 2 weeks before the test as opposed to 1 week would be very helpful! Especially since the final and the mid-term carry so much weight in this class. I think it is very important that students would be able to prepare well and fully. that is my one recommendation. I am going to miss this class, thank you so much for another amazing term! |
The midterm was still a little too long in my opinion. Not enough time either. I know you don’t think so but most students are taking other classes and have other finals to do that require just as much attention as yours does. Allowing 2 hours would be better. |
None that I can think of. |
I would do more class discussions so students are required to interact more and bounce ideas off each other. |
