Did you use your computer, tablet, or smartphone to electronically subscribe to the Google calendar that was made specifically for this class, which included important class dates, such as Achieve deadlines, LCC deadlines, and extra credit and exam deadlines?
NOTE: Subscribing to the Google calendar provides automatic updates and reminders to your smartphone or computer. This is not the same as just clicking the calendar link in Moodle, which you have to actively and repetitively do on your own initiative.

Students were required to use the Macmillan Achieve platform. It allowed students to work at their own pace during the week. Being an online class, most required materials were included in Achieve, including the textbook. Achieve had its own gradebook, which we did not use, but it certainly provided students with immediate feedback. All together, the Achieve activities counted for a very substantial portion (50%) of your overall grade in the class.

I am fully aware of the high cost of textbooks. On the other hand, a good quality product is worth paying for.
This term, students had a unique opportunity to access the required course materials for free. The normal price for the ebook and Achieve website access would have been approximately $50 for the term.
This textbook is NOT the textbook I have been using for the past several years. The subject matter covered in this course is the same regardless of textbook choice, but part of my decision in making the change was because it would be free to students.
THEREFORE, please feel free to give me your honest evaluation, both good and bad, concerning the TEXTBOOK portion of Achieve.
With your feedback, and that of all students enrolled in the course, I may or may not continue to use this textbook and Achieve website for my future online students. Use this space to provide me with any relevant comments on your Achieve textbook experience, including positives and negatives, general or specific.
How satisfied were you with the quality/readability of the textbook? How satisfied were you with the included information? (too much detail, not enough coverage, etc.?)
Other areas of feedback could include ease of use (online), value for the $50 price (if you had been required to pay for it), whether you liked reading a fully online textbook, how you were able to highlight the text and/or take notes, readability, whether or not you used the "read it out loud to me" option, or any other included feature.
Do you have anything else to say about the textbook? (its positives, negatives, biases, organization, layout, length, etc?)
| Respondent | Response |

The text was easily read and interesting, but it felt a little short for all the chapters, I wish there was a little more to read. I think the user interface was really good and super easy to use. I never had a problem finding any of the work assigned or finding specific things in the text. I didnt use any of the "extra" feature, like highlighting. I like that it was FREE!! |
I honestly really liked it and preffered it over a regular textbook. |
I thought the text was very engaging and interesting to read. |
I felt that the Achieve system was incredibly helpful within the course as the materials covered within the textbook had direct relations to the assignments. Some of the questions proved to be fairly detailed, asking for a specific sentence from within the text, but this didn't change how much I liked using it, as it forced me into taking a more in-depth look at the material covered within the text. |
| I was very satisfied with the quality and readability. And the information included in the textbook was enough in my opinion. | |
No, I thought it was super helpful! |
The textbook was easy to read and enjoyable. |
The textbook was ok |
I really enjoyed the achieve website. I highly recommend you using it in your future courses. The achieve website made it very enjoyable to learn. |
I would definitely choose a free or cheaper version of a book if it mean having an electronic copy rather than physical. I actually prefer electronic reading. The text was easy to read. Sometimes I felt it to be a bit repetitive, but not too often. I haven't read another history text in 14 years, so I don't have too good an idea how it compares to other text books, but I did find it very organized. The way it broke the chapters down into sections made my time management fairly easy. Overall, I think it was a good quality textbook. The quizzes help me to remember what I've just read as well. |
I think that the textbook and the learning curve assignments were all very useful and interesting. |
I don't have any complaints. |
The textbook was good and I enjoyed the free version. I liked the other textbook from previous terms better, but I enjoyed the learning curve quizzes from the online book and they really helped me engage in the textbook better. |

Almost every week, I provided full videos (from the LCC library streaming website) of varying lengths for students to watch.
Normally, in the face-to-face courses I teach, we don't have the time to watch full videos in the classroom. Instead, I show shorter clips from the longer, full-length documentaries that I personally watch and edit in preparation for this class. While these clips are more specific to the lecture and a particular section of the textbook, along they cannot provide the "bigger picture" or overall view that a long, full-length documentary can. Since there are no lectures and required meetings in this asynchronous, online class, I decided to require that students watch the "full videos".
Overall, what role did
these weekly videos play in your

Do you have any other feedback for me concerning the use and requirement of these videos?
- Was it helpful that
you were able to pause and/or rewatch
these videos?
- Were you able to take notes, see how the video related to the textbook, and easily determine the main purpose or message or concept being presented?
- After watching each video, did you come away clearly understanding the reason why it was assigned?
- The videos came from different sources/narrators/production dates. Did you have a favorite or two? Where there any that you definitely did not like? Be as specific as you can.
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
| I think for all of these questions I was kind of in the middle of the road. I am easily distracted at a computer, so the long videos didnt always get my full attention. | |
I thought they were good |
The videos are good but most feel a bit outdated |
The videos proved to be a nice break from the Achieve content, letting me take in some different views on the same material being covered by the text. Overall they didn't feel necessary to my success in the course but proved to be a nice supplement that gave me a deeper understanding of some of the topics. |
Though it was boring to watch it did help me understand the text a bit better. Pausing during the film were of great help while watching. |
| I have no other feedback. | |
The videos added a unique perspective on those parts of history. |
Videos were relevant |
| The videos were not only helpful but entertaining as well | |
I feel like your course is very good |
The videos helped engrain what I had already just learned. I will admit I didn't always watch them and sometimes I would skip through parts. |
Everything in this course went smoothly and I found the topics interesting and relevant. |
The videos were extremely helpful and I found them very interesting. It was a lot easier for me to understand and stay engaged compared to reading the textbook. A lot of times I would watch other films and documentaries and I could compare the information better. |

Due to COVID-19, nearly every class at Lane has been "transformed" into some sort of remote/hybrid/online class.
I am interested in your input on the use of Zoom, the online video conferencing tool. As I see it, there is a wide range of uses for this tool, from no use, to minimal, to occasional, to frequent, AND from optional to required.
LOW USE - For years, I have used Zoom as a way for my online students to meet online for virtual office hours, instead of having to come to my office on campus. I continued offering that option this term and enjoyed the conversations with students who utilized the opportunity.
MEDIUM USE - I have spoken to some of my social science department colleagues at Lane who have used Zoom more frequently, at least once a week, for optional gatherings of students to meet and discuss the subject matter.
HIGH USE - On the far end of the Zoom spectrum, I have also spoken with some of my former students who are now at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. They had mandatory Zoom meetings, two to three times each week, on specific (but regular) days and times throughout the entire term. Some were required to attend these mandatory meetings for multiple courses.
Which of the following scenarios would you most likely prefer?

You can use this space to explain your answer in a bit more detail than the choices listed above. If you did have a class where an instructor used Zoom in a way other than I did, feel free to share how that either worked or did not work for you. In short, provide any Zoom-related information here that might help me to determine how to better use it to serve future students.
| Respondent | Response |

I hate zoom with all my heart. I would like to never use that application ever again. I usually prefer in-person classes! |
I liked the way the class went just how it was. |
I prefer meeting on zoom but I also enjoy the flexibility this course offers so it can fit in with my work schedule. |
I think having mandatory zoom meetings is a good way to keep students directly engaged within the course and fosters more interaction between the students and professor. However, after taking this class I am much more inclined to support the low use option, mainly because of how much I enjoyed the Achieve system, as it allowed for a much more free form kind of class experience than I am used to. |
It helped me keep focus on the my course every week. And interacting with the professor and students make it a little bit more intriguing. |
I would be okay with either way. I think in person is always best but we live in a different era now. |
I prefer in-person classes, and weekly zoom lectures are as close as we can get to that with an online format. |
| Being able to do schoolwork on my own time is key to my success | |
I enjoyed the full time online this course offered |
I have a very busy lifestyle. I have children and a full time job. Mandatory or specific day/time meetings, whether virtual or not, are not ideal for me. That is the biggest reason I take as many courses online as possible, for the flexibility in my schedule. |
I like the asynchronous class system and found it easy to navigate. |
I am more engaged in class and I pay attention better when I am in person. I found myself to be easily distracted with courses over zoom. |

Each week I witnessed a number of students who would login to Moodle/Achieve on the weekend only and complete all of the exercises, LearningCurve, and the chapter test in a single day. In my professional opinion, this is a poor way to study history chapters, which should be accessed throughout the week. One idea I can implement to enforce this preferred method of study would be to include several due dates (for starting the LearningCurve and completing the other quizzes) throughout the week. I could require Tuesday, Thursday deadlines, or maybe just Wednesday deadlines, saving the Sunday deadlines for completing the LearningCurve and Chapter Tests.

week and procrastinate less. For
others, due to family, work, or other
obligations, midweek deadlines might impose
true obstacles. Please use this space
to explain your support or opposition to the
proposal to add midweek deadlines to this
course.
| Respondent | Response |

I love having deadlines at the end of the week on Sundays. My week is super unpredictable, especially in the evenings so when its all one day I can plan around that easier. |
I like that it was all due on the weekend just cause of work and other things |
I would sometimes fall into this trap and I feel more varied deadlines would help prevent this. |
I am in the camp where the weekend deadlines provided me with a scheduled time where I had to complete my work, though more often than not I would try to get them done on Thursday when I had time to sit down and do the entire Achieve work. Still, the weekend deadlines gave me some wiggle room so If something came up, or I couldn't get it all done in one sitting, I never had to worry about missing the deadline entirely. |
Having the midweek deadline would keep me or students more engaged, but sometimes the week does get a bit busy and sometimes would forget. |
I have no proposal. |
With my schedule, the weekends(at times) was the only option I had. I think that your plan might work better for some but not all students. |
I appreciated the flexibility of my schedule a single end-of-week deadline provides |
One deadline keeps it simple and gives no excuse for work not getting done. |
I liked having the weekends to work because of my busy weekly schedule. |
I did try to log in at least 4 days a week and complete some work a little at a time. I agree that saving it for the end of the week is not a good method. I think their may have been one week or maybe two that I let myself get a little behind. Having that earlier deadline would have helped me to avoid that at all. On the flip side, during that one or two weeks I got behind that extra deadline may have caused me to receive no credit on an assignment or two. Like I mentioned before flexibility in scheduling is important to me. All in all, I like the one Sunday deadline. |
I think that deadlines in the week can detract from the point and be more of an obstacle for students taking other classes or have other responsibilities. Deadlines during the week can be forgotten and screw up easy points that can easily be earned. |
I think it should be up to the student of what he/she wants to do. Personally I cant retain that much information in one day and I need to spread myself out, but I think that's different with other students. Whatever method they choose to learn and study will reflect on the mid and final tests. I find it nice that I don't feel time crunched to do certain things every week. Sometimes things come up in life and I find from experience that if something is due in the middle of the week and I have something come up, my number one goal is to complete the assignment and not necessary learn it. |

Moodle Website Organization
In Moodle, I used a "folder view" style of class which treated each week as its own collapsible and expandable folder. Within each week, your tasks were organized into two categories: #1 reading/viewing and, #2 assignments to "turn in". In this course, you were provided with links that took you "OUT" of Moodle to class materials located in Google Docs and to the Achieve website (with its own login). These external links also took you to videos located on the LCC Library streaming server and required a separate login. Finally, I provided students with a course deadline calendar that was both subscribable and available as a pop-up webpage (with specific dates and times), to go along with the more generic weekly "calendars" that only included "due Sunday".
In short, I'd like to know how well (or not) this course organization, and linking to resources "outside" of Moodle worked for you. Have you taken another course where the instructor has done something different that you preferred? Was this course organized better/clearer than others you may have taken? Do you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for improvements?

This course was super easy to navigate, I have no gripes with it! |
It was good the way it was |
I thought the layout with the checklist was very helpful in keeping organized. |
I really liked how the moodle page was laid out, as it gave a clear view of what was happening each week while also letting me focus specifically on the current week rather than having to scroll through a huge list of assignments just to get to the current week's work. |
I personally like this style as most of my other classes use this format which is very clean and organize. |
This course was very well organized. I would change nothing. |

I think the course organization in Moodle was just fine. |

Your Moodle is very well organized, I appreciate that you don't clog it up with unnecessary information. |

This was organized perfectly. The most organized online course I have taken so far! Super straightforward. |

I love the layout. |

The Moodle page was very organized and clear. I also appreciated getting rid of everything after the mid term on Moodle and helping cleaning it up for the next unit. |

Achieve Website Organization
As I stated earlier, this was the very first time I have assigned Achieve to my students. Unless you have used Achieve before for any of your other classes, using their website was a new experience.
How well, or not, did the Achieve website work for you? Was it easy to navigate or more challenging to manage. Were the weekly assignments clearly organized and easy to find and complete? Did the website "behave" the way you would expect it to work when clicking various links.
NOTE: I'll be sharing your anonymous feedback with Macmillan, the publisher of Achieve, as a way of "thanking them" for the free use of their textbook and website this term. Still, they want to know what improvements they can make, so be honest with your compliments and criticisms.

Achieve was the best assignment platform I have used. Everything was super easy to find and use and it told you when you were completed. |
I really liked it but it wont work on safari so i was only able to use it on chrome and that took me way to long to figure out and maybe it was posted somewhere but if not i think it should be because I know other people had the same issue |
The website didn't work the best for me. Sometimes the site would crash or some of the material wouldn't show up so I ended up missing it. There were times id do the learning path and when I would go back to the home it said it wasn't completed. When I would go back Id have to start it over from the beginning. I really like the structure and layout of Achieve but I had quite a few loading problems throughout the course. |
Achieve was honestly my favorite part of the class, as it gave me a chance to really see what graded assignments were due and when they were to be turned in. Overall the website functioned really well, and the E-Book reader made going to specific sections of the text incredibly easy, allowing me to get things done much quicker than I would have been able to with a traditional textbook. |
I believe this was my first time using Achieve, but it was easy to navigate and and well organized. |
| It worked great for me every single time I used it, zero complaints. | |
I had an issue with Achieve the other week when the link would take me to the next chapter quiz. It only did it that one week. The other issue was how I felt the summative quizzes and the midterm test had a different style of questions from what we studied throughout the learning curve and quizzes. Maybe it is just me but it felt like I studied a chapter but the multiple questions took me by surprise as if I had read from a different book. If you were to look at my grades for the last two years, you would see that I maintain A's. I put enough effort into studying for this course and I have always loved history classes. I am not sure how to explain it but it just seems like some of the course material did not match up with the questions in certain spots. Again, could be me but I cannot explain why. |
I didn't like it that much |
The achieve website worked great. I learned more than I would have if it wasn't for achieve. I was able to retain the information while enjoying learning. |
It was very easy to get the hang of. |
The Achieve site was easy to navigate and use and was organized well. I like how you could go back to previous weeks and skip ahead to future weeks at your own pace (at least for the reading portion). |
I love the achieve layout. |
Achieve was organized and easy to follow. Sometimes a little slow so you need a pretty good internet connection. The textbook was good and the activities were helpful. |

LCC has been encouraging instructors to
adopt Open Educational Resources (OER) as a
way to help students by reducing or
eventually eliminating the need for costly
textbooks. Basically, "free" materials found
on the web would be used as a replacement.
While this sounds like a great idea on the
surface, it would involve many changes in
the way instructors and students interact
with class materials. Keep these in
mind as you think about this topic.
Would web links, to online-only
materials, be a sufficient replacement for
your textbook?
I can think of at least two very substantial
changes that would have to happen
immediately.
#1 Materials would come from any number of
websites and sources. This would necessitate
incredible organization on the part of the
instructor and student: keeping reading
links in order, which specific pages of that
multipage website are required reading, and
hoping that the links don't become "dead"
links. Also, just because an instructor
could add a new link at any time, some
students may not "get the message" about the
new required materials in a timely fashion.
In short, think of a textbook with
potentially "disappearing" pages and
magically reappearing "new" pages. NOTE:
Think about the links that took you
"outside" of Moodle each week in this
class. I would do the same, but
probably many more, with link to different
reading materials/article/websites.
These would take the place of a normal,
single textbook.
#2 You would have to do ALL of your reading
online. (Yes, I am aware that all of
you did this with the free Achieve textbook
this term.) Of course, some students
may choose to print out the materials, but
think of printing out your current
textbooks, either a few chapters at a time
or everything that is needed for the
term. Do you have a printer?
Does the replacement of a textbook that
results in the printing of volumes of paper
cause more problems than it solves? Do
you like to read online, whether it be on
computer screen, or Kindle/iPad/tablet, or
even a smart phone? Do you have access to
(money for) these devices? Does this affect
how you would take notes
(written/typed/highlighted) on the
materials?
These are some of my thoughts, but the
question to you is simple. What can you tell
me about your own readiness or willingness
to buy or not to buy textbooks and save
money (or not), surf many different websites
(or not), read online (or not), print
webpages (or not) for a history class such
as this one? Have you ever taken a
class that used only free, online materials?
How did that work? How might it
work for this specific HISTORY class?
| Respondent | Response |
|---|---|
Buying text books for some classes is fine for me, like in a math class! But sometimes textbooks for a history class seem odd to me since there are so many other online resource to find this information. |
all online |
I really enjoy the option of a free text even if I need to read everything online. |
I view textbooks as an essential part of every course as they keep the material centralized and focused building off of previous chapters. I think without a clear single textbook providing materials that make sense in a history class would prove incredibly difficult, with readings jumping around and just general course organization. I feel like this would also make doing homework a much more involved process than it needs to be, increasing the amount of searching you would need to do to find references to the questions you are being asked. |
Though if a textbook was required I would buy it online, though some of my classes have had free online material which was as equally helpful. |
I think a lot of students would appreciate the option to save money on books for classes. I appreciate that we did not have to pay the $50 for the Achieve book this year. I would be for using online services and books to save money. The online format does not bother me one bit. |
I did like that all the reading was from one source. |
I don't think anybody would disagree with saving money. College is expensive enough so anywhere that costs can be cut is a huge win for all college students. |
This is my third term at LCC and all my courses have been online (10 so far). All of my online books, course readings have been free except 3. One I rented digitally online through Amazon and read through the kindle app and 2 I had to buy physical copies of. I prefer reading digital copies. It make it easier to copy/paste when taking notes or if you need to directly quote and use the source for an assignment (which doesn't apply so much to this course). My two physical copies were by far my most expensive and I don't think I'll go through the hassle of trying to sell them online. Therefore I'm stuck with expensive books I'll never use again, which I fear is a waste of paper. |
I think that paying for textbooks is annoying and I can understand the issue, however I am on board with a cheap textbook option. |
I don't have a problem buying a textbook that's goods long as the instructor actually uses it in the course. It can be frustrated to buy a textbook that the professor never uses. |

My main problem with the Achieve is that sometimes it wouldn't load all the material so I'd think I had everything done completed but then it would show incomplete on my gradebook. |

Nothing I would add. It was a very in-depth survey. |
| No, but I do believe the midweek deadlines would be a great idea. | |
Nothing to add here. Thank you for your time in working with us to study this part of history. |
I feel like covid 19 didnt really effect me in this course too much, Due to it being online. |
I really enjoyed this course. Honestly, I think it was a perfect course! The book was free and informative. The weekly deadline was easy to stay on top of and the quizzes helped reinforce the learning. The midterm was timed so perfectly that I was sweating, but I got it in with 1 minute to spare. The class was organized VERY well. I felt pushed, but not over the edge. The requirements and expectations could not have been clearer. As a professor, you were professional and kind. You were communicative when needed and always replied to my messages. I will be looking for more of your courses to take! |
I have no questions. |
I wish we would have had some classes at least over Moodle that talk about the information we are learning in the textbook and I was a little disappointed when I was only getting my history from the textbook and videos. Other than that the course was good intresting. |
