the instructor was helpful and nice

i liked that i actually learned a lot about history during my time during this course and made me more interested in taking the 202 class! i didn't expect to like the class as much as i did since i never had much interest in U.S. history but i enjoyed it very much!

i liked the forums

The lectures were well done and engaging. It was enjoyable as a history class, and I enjoyed how the instructor always wanted the students to think while comparing modern events to the historical past.

I liked being able to engage with my classmates in the forums and be able to talk about material with them as it allowed uncommon ideas to be discussed.

From the very first day, you are given crystal clear expectations for the rest of the term. As long as you take advantage of the generous grading system Escobar uses, you'll easily pass. The material covered over the term was also (for me) very engaging and interesting.

Every aspect of the class, it made me think, it was engaging, the instruction was informative, if I could take the other subsequent classes now, I would, and intend to do so after I have completed my degree.

Mr. Escobar has some of the most engaging lectures that I have ever attended, I will definitely be taking the second part of this class. I greatly appreciate you including the external articles in your lectures, as it gave me a better understanding of the topics as we discuss them in class.

Assignments and exams were VERY straightforward and clear on how to get the grade you want in the class, there wasn't any guess work and whether or not what I was learning was relevant because topics were outlined really well in the quizzes and study guides for exams.

I like the information and how knowledgeable and passionate the teacher was about the material.

Personally, I tend to struggle more in history as compared to my other classes so I really liked that by completing all my assignments and being actively engaged in the course work I was able to gain a vast majority of my points. This was a big stress reliever for me as my grade didn't depend on how I did on the tests alone and, along with this, not having to memorize the little details and dates allowed me to focus on the bigger picture of our history.

I like Joe’s personality, he is an easy instructor to listen to. He is also very passionate in the subject that he teaches, which I think is very admirable.

Instructor is passionate about the subject and very knowledgeable. Coming to class was worth my time and I never felt like he was coasting like some of the students. Lecture slides are well made, make good use of space, and are efficient without being too dry.

I felt the instructor gave me a fair opportunity to receive a good grade, even though I struggle with testing. I appreciated the reminder emails. I liked how Mr. Escobar compared our country's history to today's current events. I thought he was very professional and kept his own political views out of class discussions, and solely focused on the material, which is different from what I have experienced in other classes. I felt confident that my grade would not be affected by my political views smile Overall, I really enjoyed his class and absorbed a lot of information.

What I liked about this class is how organized it was. Everything was straight to the point which helped the study process. There were also a lot of opportunities to earn a higher grade. If you do well on the quizzes and forums, there should be no reason why you can’t pass the class-even if you have a hard time on the exams. I’m glad class was made this way. Made learning a lot easier for me.

I liked how the class was set up, it is easy to do well in.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class and I felt engaged and learned a lot. It was an interesting grading method of how: +70% on quizzes turned them into 100%, then the majority of the grades from the class are from the forums and midterm/final.

find a different book if you always do PowerPoints why should you have to pay something that is electronically only for that price why even have a book

i felt as though the instructor was great! I could tell Escobar was super interested in what he was teaching as was able to sometimes bring the history we were talking about to current events! Thanks for the term!! 😊

maybe add in class discussions about forums

I wish there were more chances for student engagement. The yes/no clickers was something that seemed like a good idea but I did not experience them in class past the first week or two.

I feel more days where we were able to use the voting devices we used on the first day, as even though the instructor is amazing being able to interact through the devices made the material more engadging.

Sometimes I would be taking notes, and the slides would jump forward and backwards on certain things, which ruined my flow and structure somewhat. (ex. you would cover topic A somewhat, jump to topic B, than C, and then finish what was being said about A) This was not a major issue, just a small annoyance occasionally.

I didn't really enjoy the forums in this course. I felt I had to put a fake version of myself out there in the discussions in order to get a good grade. In future, I hope the forum system used is adjusted.

There is very little that I think could improve the class. Perhaps an image of the important places on the map, both the one for the midterm and the one for the final, to study if we manage to miss something in class would be helpful for the class as a whole. However, that might also make the students less likely to focus on notes. I think that would be up to the professor.

Personally I think forums are a little mundane but I think that is mostly due to the nature of forums and the quasi-conversations it creates being a little akward at times. That being said the topics for the forums were pretty good.

I actually really enjoyed this class and was able to gain an understanding on our history; although, being that it is a hybrid house there was a lot of reading to do on my own time that would've been helpful to have a more in depth explanation on.

I would recommend more interactive activities to go along with the information to help retain more. I feel that the amount of information was overwhelming and hard to digest from just sitting and being talked at.

More class engagement for sure. I wish we would have utilized the clickers that Joe had brought out on the first day of class. The lack of engagement made it harder for the material to stick. 

I'm not sure as the structure of the class is pretty limited by the institution itself, and I think the class already as good as it can be with the limitations in place. If I had to say anything though, I would like more interactive classes in person--- I'm talking in person discussions, activities, maybe even labs.


I think it would be easier to learn these topics if there was more engagement during the lectures. There was often a lot of information all at once and went really fast. It would help to possibly have the students engaging more during class so they can understand the topics better.

  I would advise the instructor to talk slower. It was difficult for me to take detailed notes in class and I felt like I couldn't ask very many questions because we had already moved on to a different topic. As a student that is also working, it was difficult to complete tasks on the weekends. 

I feel the improvement for this class could include less outside sources that the instructor doesn’t plan on including on the test being a main subject in class. There were a few things that were spoken on and brought to light that simply weren’t on the test. This made studying a bit more difficult. Other than that, this semester has been great. Thank you!

Easier study guides to understand. They use very vague language- "bible", "civil war", etc. It's just difficult to go off of because that could mean anything.

The class structure and hw were just fine and as expected.  I struggled with the mid-term and final. The amount of terms was difficult and east to get mixed up. Maybe even a single note card on those might help a lot of students better understand.
