Making Muscles and Building Bones
A presentation for Mrs. Selven's 3rd Grade Class
Why do I love to talk about bones and muscles?

Why is learning about how our body works important?

Your muscles have electrical charges inside of them
Electrical charges stimulate all muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth) to contract
Watch how all the cardiac muscles in the heart move cardiac muscles to make great squeeze around 60-100 times each minute for your entire life!
Watch how muscles in your arm contract to allow you to move your body and body parts
Watch how muscles in your blood vessels and hollow organs (stomach, intestines, bladder) produce movement
(Start at 52 sec to 1:43)

Let's look at some muscles!
Bones
Bones allow us to move body segments. There are some very unique bones. Did you know there are bones inside your ear?

Appendicular Skeleton
Take a look at these bones: what do you think is their main function?

Axial Skeleton

- Most skeletal muscles have a tendon that attaches muscle to bone
- Skeletal muscles cross at least one joint so that when they shorten or lengthen, the bone segment moves.
- Ligaments attach bones to each other
What does bone marrow do?

Bones make all of our blood cells
- red blood cells - deliver oxygen to all our body tissue and remove carbon dioxide
- white blood cells - a collection of different cells that defend our body against infection and disease
- blood platelets - cells that help blood clot and stop bleeding after an initial injury
How can you keep your bones and muscles healthy?

Can you recall the three types of muscle cells?
Can you name one thing our three muscle cells have in common?
Can you name one thing that explains how our muscle cells are different?
Can you name at least one reason healthy bones are an important part of our body?
What can you do to keep your bones and muscles healthy?
