Question:

You are working with a patient who is recovering from a spinal cord injury. She had no function from the waist down, but is now recovering some leg strength. The goal for w/c mobility in the plan of care is Independent with power w/c mobility at home in the community, yet you feel she needs to go home with a light weight manual chair.

Because she is getting better, can you update the goals so she can be fitted for a chair which is less restrictive?

Answer:

NO.

A PTA may not provide an intervention which deviates from the patient's written plan/goals. The PT will rely on the PTA to communicate changes in function which indicate a need for reassessment. A PTA is a member of the team who can provide input and recommendations to the PT for consideration during reassessment
