Video Instructions & Questions (Due Saturday 11.55 pm)
In Unit 9, you are asked to watch parts of
a video. You will be able to watch parts of EITHER. You do NOT
need to do both. You should have plenty of time to find videos for
this assignment before the deadline.
- an Ellyn Satter video called Feeding with Love and Good
Sense or
- a Scientific American video called Fat and Happy.
If you choose to watch Feeding with
Love and Good Sense:
NOTE: This video was produced
in 1987 and is narrated by Ellyn Satter and video narration is NOT
one of her strengths. But I, for one, am glad she's the narrator
as I find it interesting to see this side of her.
You can find multiple
copes of this at the reserve audiovisual area of the checkout
counter of the LCC library at the 30th Avenue campus. Some can be
checked out and some are to be watched only in the library. Ask
for MV 3482 or DVD 1295.
There are 4 15-minute parts to this video:
- Part 1: Infants
- Part 2: Older Infants
- Part 3: Toddlers
- Part 4: Preschoolers
You are only required to watch the first 3 parts (45 minutes
long). The fourth part about Preschoolers is pretty much a repeat.
If you choose to watch Fat and Happy
You can find this at the reserve audiovisual area of the checkout
counter of the LCC library at the 30th Avenue campus. Ask for.
There are two copies. One copy (MV
4840) is for viewing ONLY in the library. The other
copy (MVP 712) can be checked out
for two days.
You can try finding Fat & Happy on the web (there are 5 parts), but you need a fast
Internet connection to be able to watch it. http://www.pbs.org/saf/1110/video/watchonline.htm
This video, produced in 2001, I think, as part of the Scientific
American: Frontiers series, is hosted by Alan Alda. You are
only asked to watch the first 3 parts, (about 35 minutes long) but
it has 5 main parts:
- Dr. Empathy: Dr. George
Blackburn's program for weight control at Beth Israel Deaconess
Hospital in Boston
- Obesity Begins at Home: Leann
Birch's Research at the Children's Eating Lab at Penn Sate
University
- Couch Potato Kids (Sedentary
Behavior in Children)
- Eat Less, Live Longer
- The Desert's Perfect Food (The
story of how the native foods of the Tohono O'odom people of
Arizona can help reduce the risk of or control diabetes.)
Notice that one of the questions regarding this video should be
answered BEFORE you watch the
video.
Questions to answer. You'll turn in your answers online
the same way you have for all of the Study Questions. This set
of questions is in Week 9 where it says "Unit 9 Video Questions".
- (Notice that if you watched Fat and Happy instead you still DO answer this.) In Feeding With Love,
what could David be doing differently to be helpful to Matt,
according to the video?
- burp him more
- pay attention to Matt's hunger and fullness signals
- be more interested in Matt
- I watched Fat and Happy
instead.
- In Feeding With Love, Sarah is pushing Michelle to begin
eating solid foods. What does the video predict will be the
effect of this pushing on Michelle's learning to eat?
- it will help her develop the skills early so she can get
important nutrients
- it will help her sleep through the night
- it will slow learning to eat for her
- I watched Fat and Happy
instead
- In Feeding With Love, what does the video say is a sign that
Matt is NOT ready to eat solid foods?
- He can't sit up.
- He is not showing interest in his Dad.
- I watched Fat and Happy
instead
- In Feeding With Love, why does the video say Emily needs Jill?
- security
- to help her know how much to eat
- I watched Fat and Happy
instead
- In Feeding With Love, what parts of Satter's DOR (Division of
Responsibility) have Dustin's parents done well, according to
the video?
- They planned a menu Dustin can eat with minor
modifications
- They made mealtime pleasant by including him in the
conversation while not making him the center of attention
and they didn't criticize him for being messy.
- both of the above
- I watched Fat and Happy
instead
- (Notice that if you watched Feeding With Love instead you
still DO answer this.) In
Fat & Happy, what does Dr. Blackburn think works to help
people lose weight and keep it off?
- a very lowfat vegetarian diet
- a high protein, high fat, low carbohydrate diet
- a high carbohydrate diet that is also low in fat and has
lots of flavors
- a moderate diet with some fat and lots of flavors
- I watched Feeding With
Love instead.
Incidentally, I like many of Dr. Blackburn's ideas, but I
don't agree that meals should have lots of ingredients. I
think you can carefully choose just a few ingredients and
satisfy your desire for flavor and texture.
- Read what Child of Mine says about Leann Birch's work
on pages 283 and 321. Which of Leanne Birch's findings are
mentioned on the Fat & Happy video? (You can select more
than one answer)
- As children get older, they lose some of their ability to
judge the right amount to eat.
- Restricting a child's food may cause the child to eat more
than they are actually hungry for when given the chance.
- Pressuring or rewarding a child to eat a healthy food may
actually turn them off to the food.
- I watched Feeding With
Love instead.
- When left alone with a large variety of snack foods plus some
toys, which child ignored the food and then just tried a little
bit of a favorite food. Was it Morgan or was it Elizabeth?
- In Fat & Happy, what does it say is the "double effect" of
watching TV on obesity?
- When watching TV, you eat to do something with your hands
plus you eat because of advertisements for good-looking
foods.
- When watching TV, you are less active and you eat more.
- I watched Feeding With
Love instead.
- When children spent less time in front of a screen, how much
of that time was instead spent being active, according to Fat
& Happy?
If you decide to watch the
rest of this video: Roy Walford's ideas are
interesting, but I don't think the monkey
research is relevant to humans. I think
many of us would do serious harm to our eating habits if we ate
as he recommends. Ellyn Satter often describes the perils of
restrained eating. If you decide you want to watch this even
though it's not assigned, notice what the
Biosphere II participant does to her plate when
she's still hungry after her meal.
Life Under Glass: The Inside Story of Biosphere 2 (1993)
is a book mentioned in the 4th part of the Fat and Happy video.
by Abigail Alling, Mark Nelson, Sally Silverstone. It is on
reserve at the LCC Library. For two years, four men and four
women lived and worked inside the structure, recycling their
air, water, food and wastes
