Safety Considerations
- Use a gait belt
- Select an activity that is appropriate for the patient's function: use countertops, table tops, parallel bars, hi-low mats, and a second person, as needed to allow for a successful treatment
- Check your surroundings. How is the noise? Lighting? General spaciousness? Quality of equipment? Consider the level of distractibility and adaptability in your treatment environment and how this may impact patient safety and success with the intervention
- Monitor for decrease responsiveness and signs/symptoms of increased dizziness. Check vital signs. Allow for appropriate rest breaks.
- Inquire about changes in medical status and seek updates from the treatment team regarding effects of current medications.
- Inquire about discharge setting: collaborate with patient/family/treatment team/supervising PT. Educate on basic environmental safety to minimize risk for falls (lighting, telephone location, grab bars, ramps, cupboard/pantry organization, throw rugs, etc.)
