Take a look at methods that are effective in developing independence in getting on/off the floor from a wheelchair by watching this video. Observe the movements, actions, and sequence of this activity. Using the CAN YOU HELP ME? forum describe one thing that you noticed, reinforced, or question that connects to last week's lesson on body mechanics and postural observation. Challenge yourself to use appropriate medical terminology that has been introduced or reinforced in the course so far. 7. The seat is lowered approximately 2 inches to allow better use of the user's lower extremities to propel the chair; however, the lower seat may make it more difficult for the user to perform a standing transfer.
8. The rear wheel axles are positioned approximately 2 inches posterior to their normal position to widen the base of support of the chair and compensate for the loss of the weight of the user's lower extremities.
9. Two handrims are fabricated on one drive wheel, and the two drive wheels are connected by a linkage bar. The smaller handrim propels the near drive wheel; the large handrim propels the far drive wheel; and when both rims are moved simultaneously, both wheels are propelled.
10. The chair is propelled by a deep-cycle battery system, and there are various types of controls to operate the chair (e.g., joystick, chin piece, or mouth stick).
