Hip Pathologies
Pathologies at the hip have the greatest impact in weight bearing activities. Pain, restricted motion and abnormal posture lead to abnormal gait, balance dysfunction, and repetitive motion injuries
- Osteoarthritis: abnormal or excessive wear and tear, including bone spur formation and loss of articular space can occur at the femur and/or the acetabulum
- Fractures and associated total joint replacements were introduced earlier in the term. Refer to lessons on fractures, fixative devices, and prosthesis to reinforce your understanding of rehabilitation considerations
- Aseptic Necrosis: also known as avascular necrosis in the femur. Impaired or interrupted circulation from trauma or disease can result in rapid degeneration of bone tissue
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS)
Notice the structures which influences stresses to the trochanteric bursae. Symptoms consistent with greater trochanteric pain syndrome (previously called "trochanteric bursitis", can benefit from interventions (exercise, joint protection, physical agents, etc.) for soft tissue pathology. Stretching and strengthening of associated structures can prevent recurrence of condition.
